Here, you’ll find a compilation of more than 100 black-owned businesses from a wide range of industries that can be found throughout the Greater Houston area.
• Top Snow Cone & Shaved Ice Picks in Houston | Daily – Chill out with a shaved ice treat from Houston’s coolest snow cone shops this summer. Before you head out in search of the perfect snow cone, check out some of our top picks for your new summer hangout spot to cool off from the stifling heat.
• Love & Make’s In-Person DIY Workshops in Rice Village | Daily – Try your hands at making your own candles, soap, fragrances, and more at the popular headquarters for stylish do-it-yourself crafting and gifting in Rice Village. Times and prices vary. 
• Love & Make’s Fragrance Design Workshop in Rice Village | Daily – Learn how to create your own signature candle fragrance with Love & Make’s fragrance design experience. Love & Make instructors will walk participants through the entire fragrance-blending process in small groups or one-on-one. Then they’ll turn your blend into your own, personalized candle. 5pm to 6pm each day.
• Asia Society Texas Center presents FemFest Houston: Voices of Asia: Peaches | Monday, June 8 to Wednesday, June 10 | FREE – Featuring works by Asian and Asian American women, this series highlights talented women playwrights across the globe. You can join the celebration of women’s voices with three readings of Houston plays in a virtual setting. All day.
• Levy Park presents Zumba On-Demand on Facebook | Tuesday, June 9 | FREE – This Latin-inspired, high-energy, choreographed dance workout is designed to improve cardio endurance, coordination, and even your dance moves. The class is one hour long and suitable for all fitness levels. 10am to 10:45am.
• Houston Cinema Arts Society presents Leap and the Net Will Appear: Live Talkback on YouTube and Facebook Live | Wednesday, June 10 | FREE – Enjoy a free live Q&A with director Tara Admadinejad and playwright Chana Porter streaming on the Catastrophic Theatre’s YouTube Channel. You can also watch the free recording of the 2018 performance, Leap and the Net Will Appear, with the link provided on their page. 7pm.
• Numbers Nightclub presents In-SIDEs Wednesdays on Twitch | Wednesday, June 10 | FREE – Join Numbers resident DJ Wes Wallace as he spins brand new and music and videos of his choosing. 8pm.
• Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital presents Covid-19 and Kids Online Session | Thursday, June 11 | FREE – Join the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and UTHealth for a discussion with Pediatric Rheumatologist, Dr. Ankur Kamdar, about the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). Get your questions ready for a live Q&A session on Facebook Live. 1pm to 2pm.
• Harris County Public Library presents Screening of Houston Astros: Orbit’s Reading Rally | Thursday, June 11 | FREE – Have the kiddos watch a live stream of Orbit’s virtual library to learn the importance of reading presented by the Harris County Public Library. The show will also include a reading of the popular children’s book, “Orbit’s First Day of School.” This event will be held online on the Harris County Public Library’s Facebook Live. 2pm to 2:30pm.
• Do Something Trivia presents Charitable Virtual Trivia Night via Zoom | Thursday, June 11 – Get a team of up to 6 people for a Virtual Trivia Night benefitting Riverside Terrace Alliance for Beautification. Located in Houston’s 3rd ward, the Riverside Terrace Alliance for Beautification is committed to honoring the dignity of every human being who has called the neighborhood home. Minimum suggested donation $25. 6:30pm to 9pm.
• Asia Society Texas Center presents Webcast: The Impact of Covid-19 on Food Security | Thursday, June 11 | FREE – Asia Society Texas Center hosts a discussion on how to address the growing crisis of food insecurity during the pandemic, including how food supply chains have had to adapt and the role of both global and local partnerships. This program is online-only and will be simulcast to their YouTube and Facebook Live. 7:30pm.
• Labyrinth Movie Screening at The Drive-In at The Orange Show | Thursday, June 11 – Enjoy a movie under stars from the comfort of your own vehicle when The Orange Show hosts a drive-in theatre. For Thursday, they will be showing the 1986 Jim Henson classic, Labyrinth, starring a young Jennifer Connelly going on an adventure to save her little brother from the Goblin King Jareth played by David Bowie. $30 per vehicle. 8pm.
• Free Pet Food Distribution at BARC | Friday, June 12 | FREE – BARC offers free pet food and other supplies (as available) to the public to assist people who are out of work and struggling to make ends meet in light of the pandemic. This is a drive-thru service and community members will be asked to remain inside their vehicles. Pet food and litter will be distributed in gallon-bags or small sample-sized bags in limited quantities in order to help ensure we have enough to help others in need. Resources are offered free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. 7:30am.
• Fusion 2 Exhibit at Archway Gallery | Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14 | No Cover – The artist-owned gallery in Montrose is reopening its doors on weekends, showcasing the intricate works made by Robert L. Straight. The exhibit showcases his work fusing wood, metal, and glass. And will close on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. 1pm to 5pm.
• Korean Fried Chicken Pop-up at The Phoenix on Westheimer | Friday, June 12 | No Cover – The Phoenix hosts a fundraiser dinner for Zoey’s Angels. The bar will host a happy hour with Korean Style Crispy Fried Chicken. There will be two options, Super Garlicky and Gochujang (Korean Hot). It’s being held in conjunction with the Zoey’s Angels Funwalk, which is virtual this year. There’s no cover and the chicken is pay-what-you-want. All funds go directly to Zoey’s Angels. 4pm to 8pm.
• Houston Symphony presents Living Room Series with Aralee Dorough and Colin Gatwood | Friday, June 12 – The Houston Symphony hosts their weekly Living Room Series to help support the Symphony and provides a private link to view live stream recitals by Houston Symphony musicians and, in some cases, musician members of their household. Aralee Dorough, principal flute, and Colin Gatwood, oboe, are joined by Corin Gatwood on bass. Performances conclude with Q&A from audience members. Tickets are $10. 8pm.
• Houston Community College Central presents Stylish Mask Making Online Course | Saturday, June 13 – Learn how to make your very own styled face mask with an expert instructor for the HCC Central’s mask-making online class. This event will be held online. This class is $29 and you must register in advance. 9am to 1:30pm.
• Harris County Public Library presents Free Screening: Tommy Terrific-Baseball Legends | Saturday, June 13 | FREE – Tommy Terrific’s Wacky Magic presents a magic show filled with baseball-themed magic tricks and will explore the life and accomplishments of baseball pitcher Satchel Paige. This event will be held online on the Harris County Public Library’s Facebook Live page. 11am to noon.
• The Market at Sawyer Yards | Saturday, June 13 | No Cover – The Market at Sawyer Yards hosts a mix of artist mediums with a focus on folk art, the maker is the seller & artisan crafts including packaged specialty foods. They will be observing safety and social distancing practices. If you do decide to head out, public health experts continue to urge wearing face masks in public, practicing social distancing of at least six feet from others, wearing gloves or frequently using hand sanitizer or soap and water, limiting your touching of surfaces, and avoiding crowded spaces. 11am to 5pm.
• Love & Make presents Virtual Candle & Soap Making Workshops Online | Saturday, June 13 – Enjoy the fun of Love & Make’s DIY workshops while at home. In these live, virtual workshops, experienced instructors will help participants create their own soy wax candle and/or soap bars. Instructors will go through the use and benefits of the ingredients and teach various tips and techniques. Supplies are not included in the price of the virtual workshop but all materials can be found in the DIY Kits available on the Love & Make website. Virtual classes are complimentary with the purchase of a $25 Love & Make DIY Kit. 11am to noon.
• DiverCity Project Music Series Livestream on Facebook & Instagram Live | Saturday, June 13 | FREE – Market Square Parks presents a virtual edition of its new music series showcasing Houston’s diverse cultural landscape through original compositions. Presented in partnership with Houston Brass Quintet and Houston Arts Alliance, each performance will be live-streamed from a unique location in Downtown. This week’s performance is a Latin and Cuban theme with guest performance by Jesus Pacheco and Lighthouse Choir. 1pm to 2pm.
• Hear Our Voices: Virtual Women’s Dialogue on Race and Culture | Saturday, June 13 – Facilitated by The Quiet Rebel in partnership with Like Minds Communications, participate in an online guided dialogue on race and culture with female circle leaders such as Tracie Jae, Laura Conely, LaTanya Flix and more. This event will be held online. $30 per person; $125 for a group of 5. 7pm to 9pm.
• Metamorphosis Drive-In Music Festival at Minute Maid Park | Saturday, June 13 – Experience Houston’s first Drive-in Music Festival at Minute Maid Park, Metamorphosis. Enjoy three stages with live bands like Los Skarnales, Bayou City Funk and more as well as live DJs. Guests will receive silent disco headphones with three channels (red, green, and blue) giving you the option to choose which stage you want to listen to, all from the safety and comfort of your own vehicle. Tickets start at $25 per person. 7pm to 11pm.
• East End Farmers Market on Navigation Boulevard | Sunday, June 14 | No Cover – The weekly East End staple returns offering fresh garden fruits and vegetables, locally produced farm and dairy products, prepared foods, and unique handcrafted wares. Market organizers are encouraging social distancing and asks attendees to follow any posted signage. Masks and face coverings are strongly encouraged. 10am to 2pm.
• Love & Make’s Bath Bomb Making Workshop in Rice Village | Sunday, June 14 – Spend part of your day learning how to make bath bombs. The great smelling, spa-like treats are a burst of fizzy fun for the bath. At this workshop, Love & Make instructors will teach the basics of bath bomb construction, including adding essential oils and experimenting with fun colors. Tickets are $55 per person per workshop. Noon.
• The Ensemble Theatre presents Coconut Cake: Father’s Day Livestream Play Reading & Discussion on Facebook Live | Sunday, June 14 | FREE – The Ensemble Theatre hosts a Father’s Day two-day event with a live stream play reading and discussion of Coconut Cake by Melda Beaty and directed by Eileen J. Morris. This event will be held online via Facebook Live. The reading of the play will be on Sunday, June 14 and the discussion with Melda Beaty will be held on Monday, June 15. 6pm.
