- School of Rock The Musical at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts | Through Sunday, February 4 – Andrew Lloyd Webber lends his signature style to this energetic musical based on the hit film. Dewey Finn wants to be a rock star, but he needs to pay rent. He poses as a substitute teacher and turns a prep-school class of straight-A students into one killer band. All of the kids in the show play their own instruments on stage and critics lauded the show in its Broadway run for its high energy and feel-good message. Tickets range between $35 to $140, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale marketplace. Showtimes vary.
- The Barber of Seville at the Resilience Theatre at George R. Brown Convention Center | Through Saturday, February 10 – Houston Grand Opera presents this melodic romp that tells the story of how Count Almaviva enlists his barber friend Figaro to help him win the love of Rosina. Odds are, you already know the music, especially if you’ve seen the Bugs Bunny short The Rabbit of Seville. Tickets range between $25 to $325. Showtimes vary.
- Alma en Venta (Soul on Sale) at Stages Theatre | Through Sunday, February 11 – This regional premiere is the story of a Latino artist and the cost he must pay to save a soul. With nods to mysticism and the commercialization of art, it tackles the issue of what it means to be alive. Tickets are $36, but you may find limited discounted tickets for $18. Showtimes vary.
- Fetch Clay, Make Man at the Ensemble Theatre | Through Sunday, February 25 – This regional premiere centers around the friendship of boxer Muhammad Ali and actor Stepin Fetchit. The play delves into how each man dealt with life in the public eye against the backdrop of race relations in 1960s America. Tickets are $30, but you may find limited discounted tickets for $12. Showtimes vary.
- Twenty-Five: An Interactive Dance Theatre Experience at The Interchange | Thursday, February 1 to Saturday, February 3 – Presented by the Pilot Dance Project, this Houston premiere is inspired by personal accounts of the effects of mass incarceration in the American prison system. Tickets are $20. Showtimes vary.
- Unlock’d at Queensbury Theatre | Sunday, February 7 to Sunday, February 25 – What roles are we born into? What do we want – sometimes secretly – to become? This contemporary pop musical is the story of Clarissa, forever in the shadow of her stunning step-sister Belinda, set against the backdrop of 18th century England. The regional premiere is based on Alexander Pope’s satirical poem, The Rape of the Lock. Tickets range between $22 to $47, but limited comped (you only pay the ticketing fee) and discounted $18.50 tickets are available. Showtimes vary.
- An Enemy of the People at Chelsea Market | Wednesday, February 7 to Sunday, February 25 – Continuing its 10th anniversary season, Classical Theatre Company presents this enduring masterpiece by Henrik Ibsen. Delving into media and government corruption, the drama follows Dr. Thomas Stockmann, a respected physician, who discovers the local baths, a source of both income and pride in his small Norwegian town, are contaminated. Tickets are $25; $15 for students and seniors, but limited discounted $17 tickets are available for most shows. Showtimes vary.
- DUO at the Rec Room | Thursday, February 8 to Saturday, February 10 – MET Dance (formerly Houston Metropolitan Dance Company) presents this intimate evening of duets that merges sensitivity with physicality. Single tickets range between $22 to $27; couple tickets range between $38 to $47. 8pm.
- Men on Boats at Main Street Theater | Saturday, February 10 to Sunday, March 11 – Variety called this play by Jacklyn Backhaus “off-the-canyon-walls funny.” It’s the somewhat true story of an 1869 expedition by a one-armed captain and his crew of zealous volunteers to chart the course of the Colorado River. And by the way, all of the explorers are played by women. Tickets range between $36 to $45. Showtimes vary.
