- Lilies of the Field at A.D. Players Theater | Through Sunday, May 13 – The enduring story of a traveling Army veteran who finds himself working for some East German immigrant nuns is filled with themes of purpose and faith. Tickets range from $20 to $70, but limited $50 premium seats discounted to $25 are available for select shows. Showtimes vary.
- Hamilton at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts | Through Sunday, May 20 – Lin Manuel Miranda’s epic chronicling the life of immigrant founding father Alexander Hamilton took Broadway – and the world – by storm. Based on Ron Chernow’s biography, the show follows Hamilton’s rise and fall through the Revolutionary War to the founding of U.S. Treasury, through fortune and loss, told with a combination of hip-hop, jazz, blues, R&B, rap and Broadway music. Ticket prices start at $80.50, but are hard to come by at that price. You can probably find tickets for sold out shows, or better seats, on TicketNetwork’s resale marketplace. Showtimes vary.
- Emerson String Quartet at Stude Concert Hall | Tuesday, May 1 – Chamber Music Houston presents this season finale concert by the beloved powerhouse ensemble. On the program are selections from Haydn, Barber, and Beethoven. Tickets start at $25. 7:30pm.
- The Strangerer at MATCH | Friday, May 17 through Sunday, June 3 – A surreal imagining of events wherein George W. Bush wants to kill PBS newsman Jim Lehrer, this presentation by Catastrophic Theatre is by turns hilarious and unsettling. In other words, exactly what we expect from and love about Catastrophic. Tickets start at $10. Showtimes vary.
- Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the Ensemble Theatre | Saturday, May 12 through Sunday, June 3 – August Wilson’s play tells the story of legendary blues singer Ma Rainey, as she and her band get together to record an album, against the backdrop of exploitation of black recording artists by white producers. Tickets start at $30. Showtimes vary.
- Shakespeare in Vegas at Studio 101 | Friday, May 18 through Saturday, June 9 – 4th Wall Theatre Company presents this contemporary story of Margot, a down-on-her-luck New York actress corralled into performing a season of Shakespeare in Sin City. Tickets start at $17, but limited comped (you just pay the ticketing fee) and premium seats discounted to $16 are available for most shows. Showtimes vary.
- Daddy Long Legs at Main Street Theater | Saturday, May 19 through Sunday, June 17 – The classic story of an orphaned young woman whose college education is underwritten by a mysterious man she refers to as Daddy Long Legs offers and enchanting score and moments of discovery and coming of age. The two-character piece is rags-to-riches love story. Tickets start at $36. Showtimes vary.
- The National Ballet of Ukraine presents Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote at Revention Music Center | Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25 – As part of its first ever U.S. tour, the acclaimed National Ballet of Ukraine will perform two separate shows on back-to-back nights. The extremely talented performers are famous for their skillful mix of classical ballet techniques with original Russian dance. Tickets start at $41 are available separately for each show, with Sleeping Beauty on Thursday evening and Don Quixote on Friday. 7pm both nights.
- Houston Ballet Academy Spring Showcase at Moores Opera House | Thursday, May 24 to Saturday, May 26 – Students from the Houston Ballet Academy perform new works and pieces from classic ballets in this much-loved annual event. Tickets start at $20. Showtimes vary.
- Houston Symphony presents One Hit Wonders at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts | Friday, May 25 to Sunday, May 27 – The Houston Symphony presents this program of familiar and unfamiliar tunes, including “Come on Eileen,” “Take On Me” and “Walking in Memphis.” Legendary performer Storm Large sings with the orchestra. Tickets start at $26. Showtimes vary.
