Top 10 Must-See Plays & Arts Performances this Month in Houston: June 2017

  • Native Gardens at Main Street Theater | Through Sunday, June 18 – Friendly neighbors turn into furious foes in this hilarious new play. The regional premiere examines what happens when newcomers move next door to a couple of community stalwarts – and find their values clash. Tickets range between $36 to $45, but limited discounted $19.50 tickets are available for select shows
  • The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance at Stages Theatre | Through Sunday, June 25 – Don’t miss this regional premiere that tells the beloved story of a young scholar from New York who heads west in search of a new life, only to find love and the enmity of the vicious outlaw Liberty Valance. Tickets range between $21 to $65, but the higher priced seats are available at a discount starting at $17.50 for select shows.  
  • 1984 at Obsidian Theater | Thursday, June 1 through Saturday, June 17 – The dystopian tale takes on startling relevance today, with its themes of endless war, fake news, and the surveillance state, based on George Orwell’s classic novel. American Theatre Magazine called it “unsettling.” Tickets range between $15 to $30; but discounted $10 tickets are available for select shows.
  • Sensitive Guys at The Montrose Center | Monday, June 5 | FREE with RSVP – Horse Head Theatre presents this staged reading in conjunction with AFTER (American Foundation for Transgender Excellence and Recognition). It’s the story of the Men’s Peer Education group at Watson College, who believe that increased self-awareness can end sexual violence on campus. The group is shaken after a shocking rumor surfaces. The performance features a cast of women and gender nonconforming actors, who play male and female characters. Tickets are free with RSVP; reserved seating available with BAMF donation $25.
  • Shaping Sound: After the Curtain at Jones Hall | Wednesday, June 7 – Lott Entertainment brings this acclaimed troupe to the Bayou City. After the Curtain is the stunningly choreographed story of a man fighting to find his creative voice after the death of his true love. Tickets range between $30 to $75. 7:30pm
  • La Bayadère at the Wortham Theater Center | Wednesday, June 7 through Saturday, June 17 – Houston Ballet presents this blend of classical ballet and Bollywood, in the tale of eternal love, mystery, fate, and vengeance. Tickets range between $25 to $195. 
  • Once on This Island at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Wednesday, June 7 to Saturday, June 10 | No Cover – Caribbean beats and myth are the undertone for this fun and stirring musical, the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who uses the powers of love to bring together the community. Students from TUTS’ Humphreys School of Musical Theatre present the Tony Award-nominated show. 
  • Texas Music Festival at the UH Moores Opera House & Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion | Saturday, June 10 through Saturday, July 1 – Classical music’s rising stars take to the stage in a series of performances showcasing everything from Houston premieres of contemporary works to virtuoso settings of beloved classics. Tickets are available for individual performances and for the run of the festival. Tickets range between $20 to $135.
  • Houston Symphony with The Suffers at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion | Saturday, June 17 | No Cover – Two much-loved Houston music ensembles combine for one eclectic, exciting concert that blends Gulf Coast soul and classical sound at this free-to-attend concert for viewers looking to enjoy the show from the lush green lawn. Tickets for the covered seating area are $25. 
  • Sgt. Pepper’s at 50 with the Fab 40 at Discovery Green | Saturday, June 17 | No Cover  The iconic Beatles album turns 50 this month. Mark the occasion as more than 40 Bayou City musicians recreate it note for note in this spectacular crowd-pleasing concert in the heart of Downtown.
