Houston is a great place to unwind. In this series, we’ll hop from neighborhood to neighborhood, diving into the fun and tasty ways to join in on the time-honored tradition of Sunday Funday, from brunch to live music and more.

About 50 miles north of downtown Houston, the 21,000-acre Lake Conroe is sittin’ pretty on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River in Montgomery and Walker Counties.

The picturesque lake is worth a visit any time of year and any day of the week, but it’s a particularly awesome way to spend a Sunday Funday.

You can catch a breeze and some food and drink at waterholes and restaurants right on Lake Conroe.

Pop into favorites like Conroe Lake House, GuadalaHARRY’s Bar and Grill, Monty’s Lighthouse Cajun Bar & Grill, Papa’s on the Lake, Wave on Lake Conroe, and Walden’s Lakeview Dining & Venue, known for its waterside Sunday brunch and more casual sibling establishment, Breakwater Grille.

Get your craft beer on

Like any good part of town, Conroe is home to a growing number of craft breweries.

Southern Star Brewing Company is a longtime local darling, getting its start back in 2007. Now in fresher, bigger digs sitting on over 13-acres of wooded property, stop by to Sunday Funday with signatures like the sessionable Bombshell Blonde or West Coast–style Conspiracy Theory IPA.

Over at B-52 Brewing Co., the freshly tapped brews are just as beautiful as its hidden woodland setting. Pop in for a rotation of beers like the Breakfast Stout or Taeda Hazy IPA to pair with some seriously good Sunday brisket from Nomad BBQ.

Newcomer Fass Brewing is another worthy choice, with its taproom open in the historic Gentry Building in Downtown Conroe. Score tastes from its rotating housemade beers with snacks like brats, pretzels, and pizzas.

Enjoy the old-timey action of Conroe’s historic downtown

Historic Downtown Conroe is as charming as ever, harkening back to the boomtown days and lined with restored century-old buildings, art galleries and boutiques, and cozy cafes.

You can catch live performances at the gorgeous 1934 Crighton Theatre or intimate, 250-seat Owen Theatre; join the locals for pints, pub grub, and live music at Red Brick Tavern and Pacific Yard House; or check out cool hangouts like 202 MainThe Ferm, B E Winery’s The Lounge on Main, and the secret speakeasy, The Vault Speakeasy, at MoCo Food Hall.
