- White Guy on the Bus at the MATCH | Through Saturday, September 7 – Dirt Dogs Theatre presents this regional premiere about a wealthy white businessman who befriends a struggling black mother on a city bus. An examination of power, money, and justice, this should prove a magnet for anyone who cares about how we relate to each other, and the need to set aside our own prejudices to do so. - The Doyle and Debbie Show at Stages Repertory Theatre | Through Sunday, September 8 – A hilarious send-up of iconic singing duos, this musical finds Doyle Mayfield on the rocks. A partnership with Debbie could be his ticket back to stardom. But when her star starts to rise, Doyle could wind up a permanent has-been. With original songs such as “Barefoot and Pregnant” and “When You’re Screwing Other Women (Think of Me),” this is an irreverent summertime romp. - Giselle at the Wortham Theater Center | Friday, September 6 through Sunday, September 15 – The Houston Ballet presents this enduring classic, the story of a peasant girl deceived by an aristocrat. The Stanton Welch production of the 19th-century ballet was created specifically for the Houston Ballet dancers and it opened the company’s 1967 season and remains a favorite. Augmented by exquisite sets and costumes, this is a ballet that promises to delight newcomers to the genre even as it rekindles a love of the art form for those who’ve seen it before. - A Chorus Line at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts | Tuesday, September 10 through Sunday, September 22 – TUTS presents the landmark 1970s musical that is as much about people as it is about life in the performing arts. At a grueling audition to be cast in the chorus of dancers of an upcoming show, performers tell their stories and hope their talent is enough to land them on stage. Featuring the iconic “One” and “What I Did For Love,” this testament to dance, song, and theater is a modern classic. - The Hiding Place at the George Theater | Wednesday, September 11 through Saturday, October 12 – This world premiere based on a true story finds the Netherlands in the grip of the Nazis. In an act of bravery that brings terrible consequences, Corrie ten Boom and her family hide Jews from their would-be captors, in a play that explores how love and hope triumph over evil. - City of Good Abode at the Evelyn R. Rubenstein Jewish Community Center | Thursday, September 12 to Sunday, September 15 – A powerful examination of the relationship between African Americans and American Jews, this drama takes place amid the Memphis sanitation workers’ strike in 1968. Winner of the 2017 Jewish Play’s Project’s New Play Contest, the highly regarded work is making its premiere here in Houston. Tickets are $36. Showtimes vary.
- The Winter’s Tale at The Alley Theatre | Friday, September 13 through Sunday, October 13 – Shakespeare’s classic story of romance and tragedy –and comedy– gets flipped on its head in this production directed by Alley artistic director Rob Melrose. Set in Texas, the action is seen through the eyes of a young Houstonian and features the entire resident acting company. - The Hard Problem at Main Street Theater | Monday, September 16 through Wednesday, October 16 – Tom Stoppard’s play examines the idea that if there are only facts and matter, what is consciousness? The push-pull of these are laid bare in Stoppard’s latest play. Main Street has a history of performing works by the writer, so expect their solid treatment of his language, ideas, and study of being human. Tickets start at $40. Showtimes vary.
- Every Brilliant Thing at Main Street Theater | Wednesday, September 18 through Sunday, October 6 – Part of the Houston Equity Festival, this one-woman show featuring Shannon Emerick and directed by Rebecca Udden focuses on how one event can ricochet across a life. - Gershwin’s Piano Concerto and Porgy and Bess at Jones Hall for the Performing Arts | Friday, September 27 to Sunday, September 29 – The Houston Symphony offers this evening of breezy, jazzy melodies by one of America’s premier composers. The concerto is a fan favorite, and audiences will love selections from Porgy and Bess, one of Gershwin’s signature compositions and an iconic operetta. Tickets start at $35. Showtimes vary.
