Where to Celebrate Sunday Funday in Houston: EaDo

Houston is a great place to unwind. In this new series, we’ll hop from neighborhood to neighborhood, diving into the fun and tasty ways to join in on the time-honored tradition of Sunday Funday, from brunch to live music and more.

Also known as East Downtown, EaDo is small but mighty, rocking a number of awesome Sunday Funday opportunities in its compact locale. From relaxed patio bars and fancy cocktail lounges to brunch, games, and live music, here’s exactly how to keep your weekend going:

Where to Celebrate Sunday Funday in EaDo

• Eat, drink, and play at EaDo’s favorite bars – Cult favorite sports bar Little Woodrow’s; the 100-tap, indoor-outdoor soccer bar Pitch 25 Beer Park; pup-loving East End Backyard; British pub Kings Court; laidback patio bars Around the Corner and East End Hardware; nerdy video game dive Neil’s Bahr; arcade and pinball bar EightyTwo; and the sprawling beer garden and adult playground Truck Yard (yes, that’s the one with the ferris wheel) are some of the area’s most fun-loving hotspots, while spots like modern cocktail lounges Miss Carousel (complete with neighboring pizza joint, Vinny’s), Chapman & Kirby, and easygoing wine bar Roots offer a more posh, intimate scene.
• Go Orange at a Houston Dynamo or Dash game – On home games during soccer season, you won’t find a rowdier, more lively spot than PNC Stadium. Go orange and get loud as you cheer on the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash players, hit the Adidas Dynamo Team Shop to pick up some gear, and pregame with cold beers, DJ music, and games at Hold It Down Plaza near the light rail station.
• Sip suds at one of the neighborhood’s homegrown breweries – Head to the sprawling yard at local icon 8th Wonder Brewery, which pays homage to the Astrodome, Rockets, and other fellow Houston icons via its array of inspired suds. Swig a Dome Faux’m Cream Ale, Haterade Fruited Gose, and Cloud 8 Hazy IPA fresh from the taps, and look out for fun events from live music to food pop-ups and markets in the yard. True Anomaly Brewing is another H-town rock star, from the meticulous minds of four former NASA employees. Expect small-batch brews from wild and sour ales to traditional Old World styles and experimental ales that are heavy on the hops, like the juicy Skylab IPA, a mashup of the El Dorado and Citra hops.
• Go big on boozy brunch at Indianola – Brunching is a Sunday Funday tradition, and the tiny neighborhood has some ace options. This modern Texas stunner is probably the best of them. Chef de Cuisine Martha Wilcox (whose culinary chops include time in the kitchen at Pass & Provisions and Pax Americana) has crafted an extraordinary brunch menu, with highlights such as Smoked Ham Hock Croquette, Third Coast Campechana, Vietnamese Steak & Eggs, and Cinnamon Zeppelins with dulce de leche and powdered sugar. Tack on buzzy morning cocktails like the Corpse Reviver and excellent Bloody Mary. Brunch runs from 11am to 3pm on Sundays (and Saturdays, too).
• Finish the night with live music – The totally quirky Super Happy Fun Land (located just down Polk Street into Eastwood) is your go-to spot for experimental electronic music, improv jazz, and underground art, offering a theater, art gallery and patio to showcase its roster of acts and artists. Started by four local stand up comics, the Secret Group hosts comedy shows and musical acts over on Polk and St. Emanuel; and just down the block on St. Emanuel and Walker, Warehouse Live is a Houston institution, rocking an extensive range of music genres, standing-room only shows, and a bar for those 21-and-up.
