- Karol G in Concert at NRG Stadium | Tuesday, August 29 – After dropping her chart-topping album Mañana Será Bonito in February, the Colombian reggaeton singer-songwriter packs NRG for a massive concert to close the month of August. 7pm.
- TUTS presents Jagged Little Pill at Hobby Center | Tuesday, August 29 | Opening Week – Backed by the songs of Alanis Morrisette, this story of a perfectly imperfect American family explores the themes of love, heartache and strength, even as it tackles deeper issues of drug use and sexual violence. The New York Times called the show one that “stands alongside the original musicals that have sustained the best hopes of Broadway.” $40 and up. Showtimes vary.
- Nosh: Houston Culinary Showcase 2023 at Shell Energy Stadium | Thursday, August 31 – A signature culinary event from the minds behind Black Restaurant Week, the sixth annual Nosh showcase offers a chance to dive into the flavors of African, African American, and Caribbean cuisine through the dishes of Houston’s top Black chefs, caterers and bartenders. Vegetarian and vegan options are available. $50 and up. 6pm to 10pm.
- 2023 Houston Fringe Festival at MATCH | Friday, September 1 – The annual one-night fest returns with an evening that blends contemporary dance, music, spoken word, comedy, cirque performances and more for an inside look at what Houston’s contemporary arts scene has been working on. $15 and up. 8pm.
- Luna Li & Dengue Fever in Concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Friday, September 1 | FREE – Asia Society Texas celebrates the Miller centennial with a free concert that joins the indie rock dreamscapes of Luna Li with Cambodian psych rock outfit Dengue Fever for an electric night of music on the Hermann hill. 8pm.
- Lil’ Keke, Slim Thug & Paul Wall in Concert at Home Run Dugout | Friday, September 1 – A trio of Houston rap legends assemble at the Katy bar and batting cages, performing chart-topping hits in a vibrant H-Town atmosphere. $35 and up. 9pm.
- Comedian Cristela Alonzo at Houston Improv | Friday, September 1 & Saturday, September 2 – The Rio Grande Valley–native dropped her acclaimed stand-up special Middle Classy on Netflix last summer, and has since been touring the country with new material touching on the funny side of topics like politics, therapy and life as a Latina. $50 for 2, and up. Times vary.
- Galveston Island Wine Festival at Moody Gardens | Friday, September 1 to Sunday, September 3 – Food and wine lovers can take to Galveston for this three-day fest featuring seafood offerings from acclaimed Houston chefs Christine Ha (Xin Chào, Stuffed Belly) and David Cordúa (The Lymbar), a wine and spirit tasting with penguin encounters, a bourbon storytelling series with military veterans, and an opportunity to explore the Moody Gardens pyramids. - Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees at Minute Maid Park | Friday, September 1 to Sunday, September 3 – Entering the final month of the regular season, the Astros face a struggling Yankees squad in a Labor Day Weekend home series that kicks off with post-game fireworks on Friday. $41 and up. - Playin’ For First Responders: Charity Sand Volleyball Tournaments at Wakefield Crowbar | Saturday, September 2 – Serve, set and spike your way through morning and nighttime sand volleyball matches at Wakefield’s charity tournament for first responders. The co-ed tourney guarantees three games per team with gift cards, cash prizes and all-day drink specials. Registration is $140 per team or $35 for free agents. 9am to 10pm.
- First Saturday Arts Market in the Heights | Saturday, September 2 | No Cover (Postponed to Saturday, September 16 Due to Extreme Weather) – Along 19th Street, you can shop artisan goods and work from dozens of local artists in the heart of the historic Heights. Plus, the family-friendly market boasts free live music, and food truck bites, beer and wine for purchase. 11am to 6pm.
- Reggae Vibes Festival at Karbach Brewing Co. | Saturday, September 2 | FREE – This all-ages festival at the Spring Branch brewery features a lineup of artists like Dem Roots, Soulfiya and much more along with a local vendor market. Noon to 10pm.
- Third Annual Texas Latino/a/x Contemporary Dance Festival at MATCH | Saturday, September 2 – Presented by Pilot Dance Project, this one-night showcase of Latinx choreographers from across the state includes returning faces as well as several first-time participants. $15 and up. 8pm.
- Golden Dawn Arkestra in Concert at Axelrad | Saturday, September 2 | FREE – On the outdoor patio of Axelrad, the costumed group brings their signature experimentation with genres and styles, sending concertgoers on a journey through the sounds of Brazil, punk and psych rock, disco and soul, and beyond. 8pm.
- Down 4 Whatever! A Labor Day Weekend Party at Social Beer Garden | Sunday, September 3 | No Cover – Celebrate the long weekend at this bash in Midtown, headlined by DJs spinning Latin, tropical bass, house, disco and more while you munch on pastor tacos and barbecue from Boot’s BBQ Company. 3pm to 8pm.
- Danzig in Concert at White Oak Music Hall | Sunday, September 3 – Former Misfits singer Danzig takes over the White Oak lawn for an outdoor show celebrating the 35th anniversary of his self-titled debut album. $45. 4pm.
- Ku Egenti & Friends: Labor Day Weekend Edition at the Secret Group | Sunday, September 3 – The Houston comic brings his friends to the EaDo comedy club, featuring some seriously funny sets from Corlis DeLauren, Trai Love, Eva Elliott and Rich Williams, with Quantum Retro providing the music vibes all Sunday night. $15 and up. 8pm.
