In recent weeks, positive COVID-19 cases have been increasing in Harris County and the surrounding area, leading to a troubling surge of hospital admissions in the Texas Medical Center and other nearby care facilities.

While the hospital system is equipped to have additional room for this surge of incoming patients, it’s vital that Houstonians do their part in helping to slow the spread of this dangerous virus, ensuring the safety of vulnerable populations and allowing front line healthcare workers to manage hospitalized patients effectively.

In preparation for an expected influx of patients, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (GOP) has issued an order prohibiting all elective surgery in the counties that are home to Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio for the time being.

First and foremost, Houstonians should stay home when possible. Utilize curbside, take-out and delivery services for food, essential items and other goods as much as you can.

If you must go out:

  • Maintain a social distance of at least six feet
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water
  • Utilize a face covering every time you go out
  • If you’re sick, then get tested and self-quarantine

Studies have shown that wearing a mask or face covering and practicing social distancing while in public can reduce transmission significantly. Even more, wearing a mask demonstrates that an individual has taken personal responsibility to be respectful of his or her neighbor’s well-being in public settings. The protection of more vulnerable individuals of all ages is the shared responsibility of all Houstonians in this pandemic.
