  • Jonathan Faber Abstract Painting Opening at David Shelton Gallery | Friday, June 3 | FREE – Open your eyes to the abstract recollections of Jonathan Faber on view at the Isabella Court-located David Shelton Gallery. Faber’s work splits the difference between representation and abstraction with images that recall familiar forms while suggesting the possibility of a new creation. The exhibit is on view through Saturday, July 9, 2016. Opening reception on Friday, June 3 from 6pm to 8pm.
  • ArtWalk of Galveston Presented by Galveston Arts Center | Saturday, June 4 | FREE – Over 25 years running now ArtWalk takes place in the heart of Galveston’s historic district. Presented by the Galveston Arts Center, the ArtWalk occurs approximately every six weeks in existing galleries, non-profit arts spaces as well as cafes and shops that showcase original art exhibits. One of the Galveston Arts Center’s largest programs, ArtWalk promotes visual art and supports the city’s arts-based community, offering alternative places to see and learn about art. Every sixth Saturday. 6pm to 9pm.
  • Matthew Ronay Psychedelic Sculpture Opening at Blaffer Art Museum | Saturday, June 4 | FREE – Featuring a series of vibrant; hand-crafted sculptures, Ronay’s upcoming exhibit at the University of Houston gallery will be the artist’s first major presentation in the United States. The vibrantly colored installations draw upon surrealistic or psychedelic themes which seem to pleasantly cross paths with biological and mythological narratives. The exhibit is on view through Saturday, October 1, 2016. Opening reception in conjunction with Hilary Lloyd’s video sculpture exhibition on Saturday, June 4 from 7pm to 9pm.
  • Hilary Lloyd Found Footage Projection Opening at Blaffer Art Museum | Saturday, June 4 | FREE – Take in a video-centric exhibition by artist Hilary Lloyd which finds the artist treating audio/visual equipment as a sculptural medium. The British artist creates video sculptures, projections, and installations rooted in sequences of found footage. This will be Lloyd’s first major presentation at a museum in the United States. The exhibit is on view through Saturday, September 10, 2016. Opening reception in conjunction with Matthew Ronay’s sculpture exhibition on Saturday, June 4 from 7pm to 9pm.
  • As Essential As Dreams: Self-Taught Art Opening at the Menil Collection | Thursday, June 9 | FREE – Houston-based collectors Stephanie and John Smither have been championing the work of self-taught and visionary artists since the early 80’s. Their collection which makes it’s way to the Menil in As Essential As Dreams is their goal to affirm that the desire to create and collect is a deeply human response ‘as essential as dreams’. The artists featured come from far-reaching; varied locations, have made work on a variety of materials and techniques, but all share a lack of formal academic training that help to question traditional art history. The exhibit is on view through Sunday, October 16, 2016. Opening reception on Thursday, June 9.
  • East End Table Community Pop-Up Dinner at Finca Tres Robles | Friday, June 10 – Enjoy a communal experience of culture and cuisine with East End Table’s pop-up dinners. The event is often set in an unusual East End setting to better showcase the area’s creative talent in addition to turning attendees onto Houston’s most notable chefs. This month’s event will be set at Finca Tres Robles, one of Houston’s finest urban farms, and will feature Chef Jeremy Goodwin who’ll be designing a multi-course menu showcasing Gulf Coast cuisine made from locally sourced seafood and fresh seasonal produce grown right on the farm. Tickets start at $106.49, not including ticket fees. 7pm to 10pm.
  • Round 44: Exploring the Role of Art & Artist at Project Row Houses | Through Sunday, June 19 | FREE – Located in Houston’s northern Third Ward in one of the city’s oldest African-American neighborhoods, Project Row Houses’ goal is to transform community through the celebration of art and African-American history. Round 44 presents site-specific installations and programs by artists active in movements around language, identity, environmental justice, affordable housing, prison reform, and police brutality. Titled Shattering the Concrete: Artists, Activists and Instigators, this ’round’ explores the role that art and artists play in questioning social attitudes in order to stimulate change. Noon to 5pm Wednesday to Sunday.
  • Skylar Fein Artist Talk: Eulogy for Frank O’Hara at CAMH | Saturday, June 25 | FREE – Loosen your collar, sit back and enjoy a reenactment of the infamous art world eulogy of artist Frank O’Hara originally read by artist and Metropolitan curator at the time, Larry Rivers. The scathing assessment of O’Hara’s life after his tragic death in 1966 will be read by New Orleans-based artist Skylar Fein who will relate the eulogy to River’s body of work. Presented by the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston this event is free to attend, but seating is limited. 2pm.
