Also in June 2016
June is one of the leaner months on the professional sports calendar each year, and with your Houston Astros unexpectedly dwelling in last place, this June is no exception.
There are some quality baseball games on the schedule, along with a Dynamo match (easily one of the most underrated things to do in Houston, by the way). Soccer fans have quite a treat on their hands with the historic Copa America Centenario tournament, which will bring Mexico’s national team and some of the world’s biggest soccer stars to NRG Stadium.
Top 10 Games & Sports Events this Month: June 2016
- Houston Astros vs. Arizona Diamondbacks at Minute Maid Park | Wednesday, June 1 – The Astros offer unlimited $1 hot dogs at every Wednesday night home game. This is the only Wednesday night home game in the entire month of June. No further explanation needed. Tickets start at $5, not including ticketing fees, find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 7:10pm.
- Texas A&M Aggies Baseball at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park in College Station | Friday, June 3 to Sunday, June 5 – The Aggies, who finished the regular season as the No. 1 team in the nation, will host a NCAA Regional from Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5 as one of eight national seeds in the 64-team NCAA Tournament. They also will be in line to host a NCAA Super Regional (Friday, June 10 to Sunday, June 12) if they advance. College Station isn’t technically in Houston, but these games will be well worth the 90-minute drive if you’re one of the many Aggie fans who live here. Ticket prices vary and are available for purchase on the team’s website. Times vary.
- Houston Astros vs. Oakland Athletics at Minute Maid Park | Sunday, June 5 – A series finale against a division opponent, and – for the kids – it’s also Orbit’s Birthday at the ballpark. The Astros’ mascot will be joined by mascot friends from around Houston and Major League Baseball for a celebration that will include a pregame photo session with fans, in-game entertainment and more. Tickets start at $8, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale site. 1:10pm.
- COPA America Centenario: Colombia vs. Costa Rica at NRG Stadium | Saturday, June 11 – The first of three matches at NRG Stadium in the 2016 COPA America Centenario, the historic centennial edition of the South American championship – which will pit six teams from North America against 10 teams from South America. This match features tournament favorite Colombia, led by World Cup 2014 star James Rodriguez, against a talented Costa Rica squad anchored by Rodriguez’s Real Madrid teammate, goalkeeper Keylor Navas. Tickets start at $50, but you may find cheaper, better, or hard-to-get seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 8pm.
- COPA America Centenario: Mexico vs. Venezuela at NRG Stadium | Monday, June 13 – The second of three COPA America matches at NRG Stadium might be one of the toughest tickets in Houston in all of 2016. Mexico always draws a raucous sellout crowd at Reliant and NRG Stadium – even outdrawing U.S. matches in the same stadium on the same night. El Tri supporters will be out in full force for this one, and the atmosphere should be borderline World Cup-esque. Tickets start at $50, but you may find cheaper, better, or hard-to-get seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 8pm.
- Houston Dynamo vs. DC United at BBVA Compass Stadium | Saturday, June 18 – The Dynamo’s slow start to the season, which had them stuck dead last in the Western Conference through 12 games, led to the departure of head coach Owen Coyle on May 25. But the season is far from over, and this matchup with DC United – led by winger Patrick Nyarko (if healthy) and goalkeeper Bill Hamid – is the Orange’s only home game in the month of June. If that’s not enough for you, it’s also Star Wars Night and characters from a galaxy far, far away will be on hand to pose for photos. Tickets start at $28, not including ticket fees. 7:45pm.
- Houston Astros vs. Cincinnati Reds at Minute Maid Park | Sunday, June 19 – It’s Father’s Day, and what’s more American than spending Father’s Day with your dad at a baseball game? Plus, the first 10,000 fans inside the stadium will get a sweet free pair of Astros Socks presented by Houston Methodist – a must for every fan’s wardrobe. Tickets start at $8, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 1:10pm.
- Astros Foundation Father’s Day Picnic in the Park at Minute Maid Park | Sunday, June 19 – Starting approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the Reds game, this event features a Father’s Day picnic buffet in the Minute Maid Park outfield, one-hour autograph session with Astros players, various family/children’s activities and more. Each participant will receive a free picnic mat and commemorative T-shirt. Tickets start at $150 for general admission ages 15 and up; $25 for ages 3 to 14; free for 2 and under. Exact time TBD.
- COPA America Centenario Semifinal at NRG Stadium | Tuesday, June 21 – This semifinal is one day before the other Copa America semifinal at Soldier Field in Chicago; the COPA America Final will be June 26 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. This matchup has major potential – with potential participants including the United States, Mexico and global soccer powers Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil (Messi vs. Neymar at NRG Stadium? Yes, please). Tickets start at $96, but you may find cheaper, better, or hard-to-get seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 8pm.
- Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Minute Maid Park | Wednesday, June 22 – June 20 is the first day of summer. This is the Astros’ last home game of June. Channel your inner Ferris Bueller, take a day off work or summer school and treat yourself to a midday baseball game in the middle of the week. Why not? Tickets start at $5, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 1:10pm.
