- Hockney-Van Gogh: The Joy of Nature at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston | Ends Sunday, June 20, 2021 – This vibrant exhibition compares nearly fifty works by British artist David Hockney against ten carefully chosen paintings and drawing by Vincent van Gogh, exploring how both artists bring a fresh perspective to color and landscape works.
- Allora & Calzadilla: Specters of Noon at Menil Collection | Ends Sunday, June 20, 2021 | FREE – Drawing on the role of Surrealism following World War II, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla bring seven sculptural works to the Menil Collection, creating soundscapes that permeate the gallery space, casting shadows across the museum, and using novel sculptural materials to evoke an awe-inducing atmosphere of bewilderment and beauty.

First Look: Opening Exhibitions in Houston This Month
- Ernesto Neto: SunForceOceanLife at Museum of Fine Arts, Museum | Opens Sunday, May 30 – MFAH’s Cullinan Hall once again hosts a large-scale, immersive exhibition this summer when Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto’s mid-air walkway sends visitors through a suspended maze of crocheted netting and ball clusters, inspired by the art, culture, and traditions of the Huni Kuin, an indigenous tribe of the Brazilian rain forest. $25; $20 for ages 13 to 18 and 65+; free for ages 12 and under. Please note that children under the age of 6 are not allowed to enter the exhibit.
- VISIONS: A Celebration of the Creativity of the The Jung Center Community | Opens Friday, June 4 | FREE – The Jung Center brings back their annual showcase of multi-media artwork from students, members, faculty, and staff of the Center, which explores their individual inner journeys and the meaning found in their lives.
- Brie Ruais: Movement at the Edge of the Land at Moody Center for the Arts | Opens Saturday, June 5 | FREE – In this first solo survey of the Brooklyn-based ceramicist’s works, visitors engage with topics concerning the American landscape and the effect industrialized civilizations have in its deterioration in disregarding environmental, human, or spiritual concerns.
- Jamal Cyrus: The End of My Beginning at Blaffer Art Museum | Opens Saturday, June 5 | FREE – In partnership with Texas Southern University, Blaffer examines approximately 50 objects, images, and installations produced throughout the 15-year career by the Houston-based artist, Jamal Cyrus.
- 9JA Vision: The Fiber and Mixed-Media Work of Joy O. Ude at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft | Opens Saturday, June 5 | FREE – Through a variety of textiles, this solo exhibition of work by Texas-based artist Joy O. Ude explores the blending of Western and Nigerian cultures through the lens of the artist as an American-born child of Nigerian immigrants.
- Suited Up: Contemporary Armor Making in Texas at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft | Opens Saturday, June 5 | FREE – This exhibition features suits of armor that explores the craftsmanship behind armor making in Texas through utilizing time-tested techniques and drawing on inspiration from historical re-enactments and iconic pop culture warriors.
- Found Objects by Joe Hale Haden at Archway Gallery | Opens Saturday, June 5 | FREE – By re-purposing found objects, trash, or scrap materials, Joe Hale Haden intends to shift the viewer’s perception of that object, eliciting a renewed interest and altering its original purpose for a greater beauty.
- The Big Show 2021 at Lawndale Art Center | Opens Saturday, June 19 | FREE – The annual open-call juried show returns to Lawndale, offering visitors a chance to view works from local and regional artists that practice within a 100-mile radius of Houston. The popular events kicks off with their traditional Preview Party on Friday, June 18 from 5pm to 7pm.
- Jagdeep Raina: Bonds at Blaffer Art Museum | Opens Saturday, June 26 | FREE – In writings, paintings, weavings, and video, Jagdeep Raina illustrates and reimagines stories and scenes from across the Kashmiri and Punjabi Sikh diasporas. Raina’s works from the past six years are featured in what marks their first solo museum presentation in the United States.
- Three Centuries of American Art: Antiquities, European & American Masterpieces at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston | Opens Sunday, June 27 – From the private collection of Fayez S. Sarofim, more than 200 works of painting in America, in styles of Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Minimalism, and contemporary art, will be on display in the Caroline Wiess Law Building. Featured artists include Mary Cassat, Edward Hopper, Helen Frankenthaler, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and others. Included with general admission at $19; $16 for ages 65 and up; $12 for students and ages 13 to 18.
- Monet to Matisse: Impressionism to Modernism from the Bemberg Foundation at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston | Opens Sunday, June 27 – On loan from France, this exhibition consists of paintings, drawings, and bronze sculpture from the 14th century through the 20th century, including works by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and more. Timed entry tickets are $23; $18 for ages 13 to 18 and 65+; free for ages 12 and under.
