Several of the city’s classical music organizations have non-holiday concerts this month, and TUTS launches one of the first non-Disney productions of a popular modern musical.

Top Performing Arts & Theater Shows in Houston: December 2024

Vincent Hsu & Soy La Ley Afro-Cuban Jazz Band: Music for the River Jazz Suite at Asia Society Texas Center | Wednesday, December 4 – Flow into a unique musical journey blending genres and transcending borders, as bassist and composer Vincent Hsu leads the Soy La Ley Afro-Cuban Jazz Band in a captivating fusion of jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms inspired by his Taiwanese roots. $30. 7:30pm.

Catastrophic Theatre: Love Bomb at MATCH | Closes Saturday, December 7 – This world premiere by Brian Jucha is about, well, let’s say, taxi dancers. Even if it isn’t. It is about what people will do for love, and it features music by ‘70s folk pop star Melanie (Think “the Roller Skates song.” Pay-What-You-Can; $35 suggested. Showtimes vary.

Rec Room Arts: Winter Solstice at the Rec Room | Closes Saturday, December 14 – It’s Christmas Eve and family tensions unfold in this German play. Bettina’s mother has brought a stranger to stay, and his arrival reveals liberalism’s inability to immunize itself against fascism’s rhetorical power. $30 and up. 7:30pm.

DaCamera Jazz Series: Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards at the Wortham Theater Center | Friday, December 6 – The immensely gifted drummer and her bandmates delve into the Grammy-winning “Best Jazz Instrumental Album” New Standards Vol. 01, shining a powerful light on music from great women composers including Carla Bley, Cassandra Wilson, Gretchen Parlato, and more. $46 and up. 8pm.

Chamber Music Houston: The Pavel Haas Quartet at Stude Concert Hall | Tuesday, December 10 – Back by popular demand, the globally acclaimed string quartet returns to Houston to perform String Quartet #7 by Bohuslav Martinu, as well as Janacek’s String Quartet #2 (Intimate Letters), an emotionally impressive yet paradoxical work, sure to be flawlessly performed. $15 and up. 7:30pm. $46 and up. 8pm.

DaCamera: Telegraph Quartet: New Worlds at The Menil Collection | Tuesday, December 10 – The acclaimed quartet offers an evening of Beethoven, Weinberg, and Schoenberg. The San Francisco Chronicle described them as “powerfully adept… with a combination of brilliance and subtlety.” $63.50. 7:30pm.

Musiqa: Impressions in Translation at MATCH | Tuesday, December 10 – Enjoy a concert of 5 world premieres for cello and piano, drawing inspiration from vibrant folk genres of Northeastern Brazil. Composers Nicky Sohn, Badie Khaleghian, Alex Berko, Jaylin Vinson and Christopher Lowry explore the lesser-known musical styles of Frevo, Maracatú, Baião, Côco de Roda and Armorial. Pay-What-You-Can. 7:30pm.

TUTS: Disney’s Frozen at the Hobby Center | Tuesday, December 10 to Sunday, December 29 – Travel to Arendelle, where the new Queen Elsa has accidentally made it permanently winter. Based on the beloved Disney movie—itself based on Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale, The Snow Queen—this is one of the first-ever productions of the show that isn’t created by Disney. More than 300 costumes, a huge set and a 21-piece orchestra bring this story of magic and love to life. $34.50 and up. Showtimes vary.

Creative Movement Practices & The Octarine Accord: Synapse at MATCH | Friday, December 13 to Saturday, December 21 – Catch this world premiere by Houston actor Shanae’a Moore, who’s crafted a play about self-discovery and magical powers told through the lens of real-world neurodivergence and disability. Lyra sees herself as damaged and useless, angry that she’s locked up because of the way her mind works. One day, she is approached by a mysterious person who tells her that her disorder is actually the ability to read and repurpose the earth’s energy. What happens if she follows him? $35. Showtimes vary.

Institute of Contemporary Dance: Renew at MATCH | Saturday, December 14 – Enjoy this evening new choreographic works by guest choreographers, Genevive Carson, Ashley Horn, Mimi Rosepink, Clyde Spears, Dwain Travis, Erina Ueda and Avree Walker. There’s also a restage of last season’s  “Gloria!” last season. These new works will be performed by the twenty four Houston Contemporary 2 company members. $15 and up. 3pm and 7pm.

A Prairie Home Companion Christmas at The Grand 1894 Opera House | Saturday, December 21 – Garrison Keillor and the PHC crew offer this special holiday edition of the beloved radio program. The show includes many of the Companion’s favorite sketches, including the Adventures of Guy Noir, Duane & His Mom and the News from Lake Wobegon. There’s also A Christmas Carolette and an audience singalong of five beloved carols. $38 and up. 8pm.
