See the latest performing arts productions and theater happenings opening across Houston from Monday, November 4 to Sunday, November 10, 2024.

This week offers multiple opportunities to see performances by young people, with shows from DaCamera, Christian Youth Theater and Main Street Theater.  

A brand-new theatrical production company joins Houston’s ever-evolving performing arts scene and the Houston Symphony swings with sounds of The Harlem Renaissance.

Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: November 4 to 10, 2024

DaCamera presents A Little Day Music at Wortham Center | Wednesday, November 6 | FREE  – Take a break from the workday to see DaCamera Young Artists perform a selection of Americana works, including Charles Ives’ My Native Land, Gershwin compositions, and more. Noon.

Lionwoman Productions presents Playhouse Creatures at MATCH | Thursday, November 7 to Saturday, November 23  – Catch the inaugural production from the company, promising theater that bridges understanding between people. Playhouse Creatures tells the story of 5 famous Restoration actresses in the year 1669, the year theaters reopened after 17 years of Puritan suppression. The moving and comedic romp gives a glimpse of an often unknown moment in history. $30. Showtimes vary.

Ars Lyrica presents The Madrigals of Love & War at Hobby Center | Friday, November 8 – Claudio Monteverdi’s rarely performed masterwork showcases six versatile singers alongside Ars Lyrica’s core ensemble of instrumentalists, all performing on period instruments. $40 and up. 7:30pm.

Houston Symphony presents It Don’t Mean a Thing: Swingin’ Uptown Classics with Byron Stripling at Jones Hall | Friday, November 8 to Sunday, November 10 – Inspired by The Cotton Club and The Savoy—legendary nightspots of the Harlem Renaissance—this  evening of iconic jazz standards include “It Don’t Mean a Thing”, “Our Love is Here to Stay”, “I Got Rhythm”, and a host of other hits. $42 and up. Times vary.

Main Street Theater’s Rehearsal & Performance Projects presents Moriarty’s Daughters at MATCH | Friday, November 8 to Sunday, November 10 – Young actors between the ages of 9 and 15 tell the story of Lucy and Louise Bullard. Living in New York in the 1890s, they are the daughters of the conman and art thief whose exploits inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes’ foil Moriarty in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. $10. Times vary

Christian Youth Theatre presents Annie Jr. at the Creighton Theatre | Friday, November 8 to Sunday, November 17 – The family-friendly show tells of the irrepressible, optimistic orphan touches all those around her. Performed by a young cast, the show features familiar songs like “Tomorrow,” “Maybe” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile.” $22 and up. Times vary.

Mercury Chamber Orchestra presents English Romantic Strings at Wortham Center | Saturday, November 9 – Immerse yourself in the sound world of Downton Abbey and Bridgerton at a concert featuring works by Elgar, Holst, Warlock and Williams. From the deeply moving to the hauntingly dark, these works showcase the orchestra’s beautiful musicianship. $25 and up. 8pm.

Final Performances This Week

Stages brings down the curtain on Sister’s Back to School Catechism on Friday. Houston Grand Opera’s Cinderella wraps at Wortham Center on Saturday.
