Explore outer space through a multi-media exhibition during HCAF’s Cinema on the Verge

Check out the Cinema on the Verge Gallery Exhibition along with special events with the artists from Thursday, November 12 to Saturday, December 5, 2015.

Explore outer space through film, photography, animation and drawing during CineSpace Art Exhibition and Screenings, as part of HCAF15. She Works Flexible Gallery will host this year’s Cinema on the Verge exhibition, which features the work of five artists. In addition to the three-week exhibition, guests are invited to attend special events including an artist discussion and a live “matchbook show”.

Cinema on the Verge Gallery Exhibition

The 2015 Cinema on the Verge gallery exhibition features works from five artists who explore outer space through film, animation and drawing. The exhibition includes Dark Enough – a video projection from Jeanne Liotta, Hypothetical Star: An Animation Diorama – a hand-drawn animated installation and film by Laura Heit, Farewell Brave Voyager – a multi-media installation about three space explorers created by Julia Oldham, The Drift – a 2007 film directed by Kelly Sears, and Deep Sky Objects – a photo series from David Janesko. The exhibition kicks off with an opening reception on Friday, November 13.

Star Noise: Recent Videos by Julia Oldham

Hear from video artist Julia Oldham as she discusses what it’s like to grow up with a father who was a physicist and how she uses science to create love stories in her works during this special event at the She Works Flexible Gallery. Following her presentation, Oldham will screen four short films: Laika’s Lullaby, Farewell Brave Voyager, Star Noise and Infinitely Impossible. Star Noise: Recent Videos by Julia Oldham takes place on Sunday, November 15.

Traveling Light: Animation and Matchbook Show

Catch a unique performance from experimental filmmaker and performance artist Laura Heit during Traveling Light: Animation and Matchbook Show at Café Brasil and the She Works Flexible Gallery courtyard on Sunday, November 15. Heit will show a collection of animations followed by a live performance of her signature 25-minute Matchbook Show – which will be projected on a big screen.

Desired Constellations Screening

Curated by filmmaker and artist Jeanne Liotta, Desired Constellations is a program of shorts featuring works like Lemon, Electronic Moon #2, The Midnight Party and four of Liotta’s own films. Don’t miss this free screening at The Menil Collection on Monday, November 16.

HCAF is a curated film festival that takes place in mid-November and is organized by the Houston Cinema Arts Society (HCAS). Started in 2009, the festival has grown and now spans eight days bringing the spotlight to films about the arts to numerous venues around Houston.
