Sample the latest culinary creations from Houston’s own Chef Monica Pope at her warm and whimsical Sparrow Bar + Cookshop in Midtown.

Update: Sparrow Bar + Cookshop is permanently closed.

Since opening in August 2012, Sparrow Bar + Cookshop has served as the headquarters for Chef Monica’s Pope’s “eat where your food lives” cooking style. The restaurant is a re-imagining of the space and concept of her former t’afia, which gained her national recognition with a James Beard Best Chef nomination and an appearance on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters in 2010. She is the only female Texas chef to be named Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine.

Sparrow and Monica remain unpretentious, serving her original takes on local cuisines with shareable plates, food to go, cooking classes and unique dining events. The restaurant features a soft-lit industrial décor, with an emphasis on shared spaces. The concept itself is a modern homage to medieval bookshops that serviced the takeaway food needs of visitors and locals.

Stepping out from the dining room, visitors will discover one of the most welcoming patios in Houston, with a shaded community table and lighting and fixtures that connect it with the interior’s soft industrial feel.

Sparrow serves dinner until 10pm from Tuesday to Thursday and until 11pm on Friday and Saturday. After that, the kitchen just offers light bites until it closes at midnight.
