This week sees a few new productions take Houston stages while a big Shakespeare Festival and other live theater shows bow out.

Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: August 5 to 11, 2024

  • Triassic Parq: The Musical at Art Factory | Friday, August 9 | Ongoing – This uproariously daring musical features singing, dancing and dinosaurs—and is narrated by a cardboard cutout of Morgan Freeman. Due to strong language and sexual situations, this production is recommended for mature audiences only. This production runs through Sunday, August 18. $15 and up. Times vary.
  • Creative Movement Practices presents Treasure Island at MATCH | Friday, August 9 | Ongoing – Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale, this production promises sword fights, pirates, mutiny and treasure as you follow protagonist Jem Hawkins through a coming-of-age adventure. This production runs through Sunday, August 25. $30. Times vary.
  • Stages presents Miss Rhythm: The Legend of Ruth Brown at the Gordy | Friday, August 9 | Ongoing – Ruth Brown was an R&B trailblazer, who set the stage for artists to follow, like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Tina Turner and more. This is her story, told with powerful singing and no-nonsense humor. This production runs through Sunday, October 13. $29 and up. Showtimes vary.

Final Performances This Week

Saturday, August 10 sees the last performances of Theatre Southwest’s Festival of Originals.

Then, Sunday, August 11 will feature final shows of the 50th Shakespeare Festival at Miller Outdoor; Melville & Hawthorne at MATCH; and The Woman in Black at Main Street Theater.
