Top Exhibitions in Houston This Month: November 2022
Everything She Has Within Herself & Yōkai at Asia Society Texas
Originally commissioned for the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Everything She Has Within Herself is a trio of murals by artists Jas Charanjiva, Chanel Miller, and Jenifer K. Wofford that adorn Asia Society’s exterior and the windows facing Southmore Boulevard. Together, these large-scale works offer a message of empowerment to women, while each on its own seeks to reject powerful and destructive myths that are pervasive in the historical structures of our society.

Elsewhere at Asia Society Texas, Yōkai: Scenes of the Supernatural in Japanese Woodblock Prints presents a collection of 80 works that include Edo-period woodblock prints and printed books that span more than 250 years. The exhibition looks at the overlap of the supernatural realm in scenes that involve yōkai—mysterious phenomena and bizarre creatures, spirits, and transformed entities.
Admission is $8; $5 for students with ID, and closes on Sunday, December 11, 2022.
Glimpses of the Past at Art Car Museum
Participating in FotoFest 2022, this photography exhibition assembles the work of Bessie Dean Parr, who operated a photo studio in Collierville, Tennessee in the early 1900s. Through these photographs, as well as a collection of vintage automobiles, visitors can peer into life at the turn of the century in small-town America, taking in portraits of the town’s citizens and catching glimpses of their environment.
FREE; viewable by appointment only from Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm.

Charlotte Salomon: Life? Or Theater? at Holocaust Museum Houston
Featuring more than 200 small gouaches on paper created by German Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon in the early 1940s, this exhibition delves into the artist’s flurry of creativity in a two-year span while in hiding from Nazi occupiers first in Germany, then in France.
Drawn from approximately 1,300 pieces she created in that time, the works examine a life marked by personal tragedy and external political events, before her death on arrival at Auschwitz in 1943.
Admission is $22; free for ages 18 and under.

Urban Impressions: Experiencing the Global Contemporary Metropolis at Moody Center for the Arts
The Moody’s fall exhibition gathers the work of more than a dozen artists from around the world to open a dialogue about the overarching aspects of modern life in the metropolis.
Through a wide array of mediums, Urban Impressions considers the visual and sensory aspects of urban life, as well as how the city impacts its residents and structures their lives in unexpected ways, leaving us to ponder complex questions that face modern cities related to social and urban planning, public health, mass transportation and congestion, gentrification, and more.

Rock of Eye & If Revolution is a Sickness at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
Throughout the remainder of 2022, CAMH offers the first museum solo exhibitions for two artists, Troy Montes Michie and Diane Severin Nguyen.
In Rock of Eye, Montes Michie draws from his experience growing up on the United States and Mexico border in order to examine how bodies of marginalized communities are frequently erased, fetishized, idealized and criminalized. Through drawings, collages, sculptures and installations, the artist centers on the social history of the zoot suit, a popular 1940s garment that became a target of attacks primarily on Mexican American, African American and Filipino American youth in Los Angeles known as the Zoot Suit Riots.

If Revolution is a Sickness by Diane Severin Nguyen is built around the titular video installation and also encompasses photographs, a site-specific architectural intervention, and a forthcoming billboard commission that will go up in Midtown during January 2023. These works from Nguyen position youth culture as a crucial site of revolutionary power, and also explores shared subcultures—in this case, K-Pop—that form relationships between regions around the world.

Golden Worlds: The Portable Universe of Indigenous Colombia at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
With around 400 works from cast gold jewelry and masks to ceramic effigies and rare ancient textiles, Golden Worlds showcases the diversity of ancient Colombian cultures, centering on the voices and concepts of descendant Indigenous communities prior to European conquest.
Included with general admission: $19; $16 for ages 65+; $12 for ages 13 to 18; free for ages 12 and under.
Opens Sunday, November 6 through Sunday, April 16, 2023.
Mel Bochner: Smudge & Robert Motherwell: As Fast as the Mind Itself at Menil Drawing Institute
In November, the Menil Drawing Institute in Montrose offers two exhibitions; a site-specific installation by Conceptual artist Mel Bochner, and the other highlighting drawings by abstract expressionist artist Robert Motherwell.
Recognized as a leading figure in the Conceptual art movement of the ’60s and ’70s in New York, Mel Bochner has now created Smudge, which features a blue powder pigment arc that sits near the center of a vast white wall, provoking viewers to engage in their own internal conversation, perhaps about what the work is or why it is art at all.
On display through September 2023.
And opening in mid-November, As Fast as the Mind Itself collects drawings by abstract expressionist Robert Motherwell, where the artist explores a range of techniques and investigates many styles that would form the foundation of his artistic career until his death in 1991.
On display from Friday, November 18 to Sunday, March 12, 2023.
