Every week we feature an enterprising Houstonian who reveals his or her five favorite H-Town pastimes. This week we hear from Dominique McGhee, co-owner of the blog The Monster Lifestyle (formerly known as Food Monsters), who serves up his on take on the Bayou City.

My Top 5 Things to Do in Houston

by Dominique McGhee

  1. Hanging out at Grand Prize Bar on a Friday night with friends Grand Prize Bar has to be one of my favorite spots in the city. The crowd is very mixed, fun and chill. Plus with a jukebox in the bar, there’s always a great selection of music being played. I would definitely recommend the “frozen drink;” there’s a new one every Friday!
  2. Using B-Cycle to explore the city – Houston recently placed B-Cycle stations all around the city and I’ve been loving it! For $5 you get a 24-hour rental and can return the bike to any station. This is a great way to see the city and you’ll definitely stumble upon some hidden treasures; I even found a cool coffee shop on one of my rides. Riding Allen Parkway along the bayou and through downtown is definitely an adventure.
  3. Having Dessert at Ruggles Cafe and Bakery – Hands down, my favorite dessert in Houston is the white chocolate bread pudding at Ruggles Cafe and Bakery. I’ve shared many laughs with friends and this restaurant and created many memories. One bite and you’ll be addicted as well!
  4. Walking through the Japanese Gardens at Hermann Park – When I want to “escape” and go to a tranquil place, I visit the Japanese Gardens. Tucked away in Hermann Park, the Japanese Gardens seem to be overlooked by many, which makes it even more of a gem for me.
  5. Houston Restaurant Weeks – Dining out during Houston Restaurant Weeks in August has become one of my favorite things to do. This is the perfect opportunity to try multiple restaurants that may be on my “to try” list and not worry about breaking the bank; plus it’s all for a good cause. It’s been great to see this grow over the last couple of years. Restaurants really add some exciting dishes to their menus for the weeks so it makes the experience even better.
