Houston is a great place to unwind. In this new series, we’ll hop from neighborhood to neighborhood, diving into the fun and tasty ways to join in on the time-honored tradition of Sunday Funday, from brunch to live music and more.
Covering the northwest corner of the 610 loop, Lazybrook and Timbergrove were once known as sleepy, largely residential parts of town.
While they remain a great place to live, you’ll now find the original bungalows and cottages mixed with newer construction, parks and retailers, bustling restaurants and bars, and some pretty excellent ways to spend your Sunday.
Where to Celebrate Sunday Funday in Houston: Lazybrook/Timbergrove
Have a laidback Sunday brunch at Cactus Cove Bar & Grill
This neighborhood hangout comes from the Creek Group (of Onion Creek and Cedar Creek fame, to name a few), rocking a mix of tasty comfort food, 25 taps of beers and boozy cocktails, and a good-times vibe. Brunch on next-level dishes like Chicken & Waffles, Barbacoa and Tater Tot Hash, Frickles, bacon-and-egg-topped Luckenburgers, and most definitely tack on a few Dranks, from prickly pear Cactus Water to the House Hemp Mary.
Brunch runs from 10am to 2pm.
Or go for a fancier brunch affair at Rainbow Lodge
Just on the other side of T.C. Jester and set in a 100-year-old log cabin on the banks of the White Oak Bayou, Rainbow Lodge is the place to go if you want to do Sunday brunch justice. The Houston institution offers a sophisticated menu of wild game fair in an unstuffy atmosphere, with standout brunch dishes including Smoked Duck Gumbo, Braised Bison Short Rib Benedict, and Louisiana-style Shrimp & Grits. Even better? Mimosas are $2 a pop until 3pm.
Say “Prost!” at King’s BierHaus
This German bierhaus and garden is basically an adult Disneyland, sporting a sprawling backyard, air-conditioned beer hall, and fun stuff like Das Boots, Shotskis, and events from seasonal Pig Roasts and Crawfish Boils to an epic Oktoberfest celebration in the fall. Choose from a lineup of German brews, Texas taps, house cocktails, wines, and spirit flights to go alongside Schnitzels, Brats, and Beer Pretzels.
Sunday hours go ’til 9pm, and brunch runs from 11am to 3pm.
Drink, eat, shop & play at Railway Heights Market
The fresh Railway Heights may be newer to town, but it’s already become a local staple. Hit it up to eat, drink, and shop at more than 40 food and retail vendors in the food hall and market, unwind on a swing seat in the front lawn, get a Sunday buzz at Stesti Brewing Co. and Puncheon Wine Bar, and look out for upcoming projects including the dog-friendly SitBar and 10,000sqft Pallet Jax (both are slated to open summer 2022).
Hang out Down the Street
Just down the way on Larkin, this friendly patio bar and kitchen is as easy going as it gets. Sunday brunch runs from 10am to 3pm, sporting pick-me-ups from Hangover Mimosas and House Bloody Marys to an egg-topped, pimento cheese and maple honey butter smothered Honey Chicken & Biscuit. Stick around all day and you can dig into things like Smash Burgers, Sticky Wings, and Strawberry Basil Ritas.
