Top 8 Live Shows to See this Month in Houston

  • Mitski with Japanese Breakfast at Walter’s Downtown | Friday, July 1 – The New York-based Japan-born Mitski has been making waves amongst the blog circuit since 2012 with three albums filled with salutes to 90’s indie rock under her belt. In 2016 she finds herself on the verge of her fourth and most highly anticipated release to date, Puberty 2. Take in songs from albums past and see what news with Philadelphia’s Japanese Breakfast set to open the show. Tickets start at $10, not including ticket fees; $12 day of show. 8pm.
  • King Khan & The Shrines in Concert at White Oak Music Hall | Saturday, July 2 – King Khan and the Shrines have been continually wowing crowds for almost twenty years now with their eclectic blend of R&B intertwined with a heady dose of psych rock. The garage rock outfit fronted by the uber-talented King Khan will no doubt be tearing the newly installed roof off of White Oak Music Hall when they make it to the new venue in Houston’s historic Northside near Downtown. Tickets start at $16, not including ticket fees; $18 day of show. 8pm.
  • Singer-Songwriter Robert Ellis in Concert at Discovery Green | Thursday, July 7 | FREE – Relax on the lawn of Discovery Green to the folk sounds of Houston’s own Robert Ellis in this free Thursday concert series. Watch on as the sun sets and the Downtown skyline plays backdrop to Ellis’ folk and country blend of Americana. 7pm to 9:30pm.
  • Halsey in Concert at Revention Music Center | Friday, July 8 – Get a big budget concert experience when electro-pop act Halsey makes her way to Downtown’s Revention Music Center (formerly Bayou Music Center). Born and raised in New Jersey Ashley Frangipane, better known as her first name’s anagram Halsey, kicked off her career with a series of covers posted directly to YouTube during 2012. By 2015 she’d garnered enough attention to snag a label deal with Astralwerks who released her debut album, Badlands to overwhelming success on the pop charts. Don’t miss your chance to see hear her dark additions to electro-pop.  Tickets start at $14, not including ticket fees. 8pm.
  • Destroying Texas Fest 12 at Walter’s Downtown | Friday, July 8 through Sunday, July 10 – Get set for the 12th annual Destroying Texas Fest which does its best (in their words) to bring Houston underground bands local, national and international to create the chaos needed in the city. With more than twenty heavy acts billed so far, there is sure to be something to please the ears of fans that can appreciate the direct correlation between greatness and a band’s logo being difficult to read. Tickets start at $82.99, not including ticket fees. 4pm to 2am daily.
  • Weird Al Yankovic in Concert at Wortham Center | Thursday, July 14 – The parody king makes his way to Wortham Center’s Brown Theater this month and you better believe he brought his famous accordion with him. The singer, producer, actor, and satirist best known for his parody versions of contemporary songs with pop culture-infused lyrics has been at it since the early 80’s with an impressive fourteen albums behind him to boot. This is definitely the concert for you if you’ve ever found yourself opting for Yankovic’s lyrics over the original artist’s version. Tickets start at $87, not including ticket fees. The show has been deemed suitable for ages 14 and up. 7pm.
  • Rhye in Concert at Warehouse Live | Thursday, July 21 – The Los Angeles-based Canadian/Danish duo have been greeted with high praise since the release of their 2013 R&B debut, Woman. The band, comprised by Canadian singer Milosh and Danish instrumentalist Robin Hannibal, have become synonymous with tasteful; minimal slow jams. The majority of the show will be a victory lap through the many memorable hooks and hits of Woman which are not to be missed live. Tickets start at $23, not including ticket fees; $25 day of show. 8pm.
  • Junkie live at Satellite Bar | Tuesday, July 26 – Enjoy a night of regional lo-fi surf and garage rock in East Downtown with San Antonio’s very own Junkie at Satellite Bar. Give a listen to SA’s take on the reverbed out beach goth sound which has been a reoccurring theme as of recent years, but typically with bands closer to the coast. Think the straight ahead instant gratification of The Ramone’s meets the drenched sounds of shoegaze. Tickets are $7 at the door. 7:30pm.
