- Walk to End Lupus Now at Texas Southern University – Begin your Saturday with this fundraising walk that celebrates and honors our region’s incredible lupus warriors, while also raising funds to help support lupus research. Participants can walk individually or as part of a team. $25 and up. 8am to noon.
- Mythical Creatures at Houston Arboretum & Nature Center – Study real fantastical creatures that dwell at the Houston Arboretum and compare them to the mythical beasts lurking just beyond the shadows. It’s an opportunity to learn more about folklore and adaptations, and even create your own Mythical Creature. $30. 10am to noon.
- Market Square Park Farmers Market in Downtown | FREE – Shop for produce, baked goods, artisan-made products and more in the heart of Downtown at this market that brings vendors from around the region to the Bayou City. - 3rd Annual BIPOC Book Fest at Asia Society Texas Center – This third annual, day-long event is a celebration of underrepresented voices through a showcase of literary works featuring Black, Indigenous, people of color and other creatives of marginalized communities. It combines the nostalgia of the book fairs with unique programming, panels, readings, vendors, book-related memorabilia, poetry performances and more. $10. 10am to 6pm.
- Hands-On Houston: Indigo-Dyed Handkerchiefs at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft | FREE – Create beautifully patterned handkerchiefs with simple resist techniques and indigo dye, one of the oldest plant-based dyes. Inspired by HCCC’s current exhibition, Fiber in 3D: Indigo Houston, this class is appropriate for all artistic levels. 11am to 3pm.
- Joy Fest at Jubilee | FREE – This family-friendly fun day includes a Ferris Wheel, inflatables, gem mining, tie dye tile making, photo ops, giant lawn games, face painting, home wellness and more. Food trucks and an adult beverage vendor will be on hand and guests can also explore up to eight professionally decorated model homes and learn more about living in Jubilee. - Black Swan Free Yoga at Post Houston | FREE – The pay-what-you-can yoga studio hosts this free session downtown, perfect for all fitness levels. It’s a chance to begin your day with stretching and meditation out on the Skylawn, drawing energy from your fellow participants. - Crawfish de Mayo at New Magnolia Brewing | No Cover – Crawfish get a spicy, Mexican-inspired makeover at this fun festival at the brewery. Expect Latin flavors that will pair perfectly with New Magnolia’s brews. Food and drink are on you. Noon.
- East End Street Fest at the Espalande on Navigation | FREE – Held during Cinco de Mayo week, this festival celebrates the art, music and heritage of East End with dance performances, live bands, artwork and plenty of fun for kids at the Plaza de los Niños. Noon to 7pm.
- 10th Annual Derby Day Party at Julep – Southern cocktailery Julep will once again host its epic Kentucky Derby Day Party, inviting guests to dress up and enjoy a classy lawn party, fully tented with more than 5,000 fresh cut flowers throughout. Expect main bars, a whiskey bar and hydration station, eats from Top Chef contestant Chef Michelle Wallace, Kentucky Derby viewing, live DJs, and more. $20 and up. 1pm to 6pm.
- Galveston Island Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Old Galveston County Courthouse | FREE – Celebrate the fifth with at a family-friendly party complete with live music, stage cars, local vendors, and other activities. 1pm to 9pm.
- Flip Phone: Queen Bey Rodeo Drag Brunch at Houston Improv – A cast of talented drag performers offers up this celebration of Beyonce and her new country album, Cowboy Carter, in a Texas-sized salute. Stick around ‘round, ‘round, ‘round, ‘round for good times and great music. $40 for 2, and up. 2pm.
- Pink Flamingo Headdress Workshop at Texas Tail Distillery – Head on over to Galveston and design a fabulous headdress inspired by pink flamingos. This is your chance to let your imagination run wild as you create a unique design that showcases your personality. $60. 2pm to 4:30pm.
- Soul Flower Music Fest at Discovery Green – Hosted in the heart of Downtown, this one-day music festival features national and local soul, R&B and neo-soul acts. Enjoy great sounds, food vendors, games, shopping, photo booths, and contests. $10. 2pm to 9pm.
- Houston Margarita Festival at the Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park – Returning for its 11th edition at the Water Works at Buffalo Bayou Park, the Houston Margarita Festival features more than 17 flavored margs for tasting, live music, DJ tunes, dancing, food vendors, and more. Advance tickets are $11 and up; $30 at the gate. 2pm to 10pm.
- Derby Down the Bayou Wine Fest at Brenner’s on the Bayou – Brenner’s springtime Wine Fest goes Derby-style, inviting guests to sip wines from exclusive makers, stroll the gorgeous bayou-side grounds, and enjoy some Kentucky Derby action. Chef-crafted bites will be served from seven of Houston’s top restaurants including Brenner’s on the Bayou, Grotto Downtown, Cadillac Bar, Willie G’s, Babin’s and a dessert station from Landry’s Signature Group. $150 and up. 2:30pm to 5:30pm.
- Pretty Dangerous: Blacksmithing Steel With Sex Appeal Opening Reception at Archway Gallery | FREE – The gallery’s May exhibition features new works by Joe Haden, who will be in attendance and give an artist talk at 6:30pm. The pieces on display demonstrate his love for and facility with the blacksmithing process, resulting in works that offer an illusion of being soft, not a quality often associated with metal. 5pm to 8pm.

- Derek Hough: Symphony of Dance at Smart Financial Centre – The Emmy Award–winning star of Dancing with the Stars, performs his all-new show in Sugar Land.
