  • The Riot Comedy Club presents Brooks Whelan at Rudyard’s Pub | Friday & Saturday – For back-to-back nights, the Riot hosts Brooks Whelan, the former SNL castmember, stand-up comic and sometimes advocate against irresponsible behavior. $17 and up. Times vary.
  • Houston Symphony presents Summer Symphony Nights at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Friday & Saturday | FREE – The orchestra presents the opener of this four-concert series that includes Lyric for Strings by George Walker, the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Recent Sphinx Junior Division laureate Amaryn Olmeda joins the orchestra for Bruch’s popular Violin Concerto No. 1, and Dvořák’s immortal New World Symphony closes the evening. 8:30pm.
  • Comedian Bruce Bruce at Houston Improv | Friday to Sunday – The side-splitting comedy of stand-up extraordinaire and frequent BET host, Bruce Bruce, takes over the Improv for five sets across the weekend. $80 for 2, and up. Times vary.

  • Family Game Night at Ingenious Brewing Company | FREE – This family-friendly night at the Humble brewery invites you to roll the dice on board games, cards and dominoes—or bring your own game. French food will be available for purchase and you can also score $2 off wines. 4pm to 10pm.
  • Rockets Draft Experience at Post Houston | FREE – Gather with other fanatics as the Rockets make their moves in the 2023 NBA Draft. In addition to live draft coverage, the night also features a live DJ, appearances by Clutch City Dancers and Clutch, Rockets legends signing autographs, and you can shoot your shot on two half-court set-ups for prizes.   • Summer Wine Share at Galveston Arts Center – In Downtown Galveston, the Arts Center welcomes DJ XYLA for tunes while you sip and share wines with other attendees. Bring your favorite bottle and make new friends. $10. 5pm to 6:30pm.
  • Uncommon Ground Opening Reception at Laura Rathe Fine Art | FREE – This opening exhibition celebrates the gallery’s new space in River Oaks, presenting works by Carly Allen Martin and Matt Devine. 5pm to 9pm.
  • Author Elin Hilderbrand at Blue Willow Bookshop – The bestselling author will personalize copies of her latest novel, The Five-Star Weekend, and meet with fans for photos.   • Couples Therapy Comedy Show with Alan Adams at Houston Improv – This relationship-fueled comedy show will find host Alan Adams delivering his views on relationships with quick-fire wit, stone-faced delivery, and sarcastically venomous punch-lines. $20 for 2, and up. 7:30pm.
  • The Riot Comedy Club presents Dustin Sims at Rudyard’s Pub – Out of Alabama comes the viral comedian and YouTuber known for his hilarious Snapchat videos and “Talking to Myself” series. He’ll head upstairs at the Montrose pub for one set at the Riot. $25 and up. 8pm.
  • Space City Pride at Numbers Nightclub – Fabulous drag performers Salina EsTitties, Marcia Marcia Marcia, Jasmine Kennedie, Landon Cider and Jax take the stage at the iconic Montrose nightclub for a night of spectacular drag performances. $40 and up. 8pm.

  • John Guzman: Flesh & Bone Opening Reception at Blaffer Art Museum | FREE – Drawing on his experience growing up in San Antonio’s Southside, John Guzman translates his psychological and physical states to abstract forms and large-scale paintings in Flesh & Bone, marking the artist’s first solo museum exhibition of work. As part of the reception, guests can also enjoy a DJ set and other musical performances. 6pm to 9pm.
  • Author Paul Doiron at Murder by the Book – Combining a noir style with the deep Maine woods, Paul Doiron’s Mike Bowditch mysteries take readers away from the lobsters and lighthouses, out into the mountains, forests and foggy islands, where secrets are kept and outsiders rarely tolerated. The author’s new book, Dead Man’s Wake, finds game warden Mike Bowditch dealing with a double murder. Free to attend; but books must be purchased for signing. 6:30pm.
