Today marks the debut of our new weekly feature “My Top 5,” showcasing enterprising Houstonians and their five favorite things to do in our city. In the weeks and months ahead, we’ll highlight the five top picks of people who get things done in Houston and offer a glimpse into what makes the city tick.
Kicking off this new feature, we’re pleased to share an exclusive from our very own Mayor Annise Parker, who took a moment to reveal her five favorite things to do in her hometown.
My Top 5 Things to Do in Houston

- Take a walk along the Buffalo Bayou hike and bike trails with a stop on the Rosemont Bridge – There is nothing more relaxing and beneficial for the mind than a walk along this historic waterway. If you get right down along the water, you’ll forget you are in the middle of the city. The Rosemont Bridge is a favorite stop because it offers one of the best views of our gorgeous skyline.
- Visit the Houston Zoo – The zoo has always held a special place in my heart. I went as a child, then I went as a Rice University anthropology student to observe the primates and as an escape from the rigors of college studies. More recently, I returned as a mother to experience its wonders with my own young children.
- Attend the Art Car Parade – This one-of-a-kind event truly depicts Houston’s unique spirit. Where else could you be sitting at a stoplight and be next to the Chicken Car or a car that looks like a big roach?
- Attend any of our wonderful ethnic festivals – Houston is the most diverse city in the nation and we like to show it off. Our differences are what make us strong.
- Curl up with a book at home – When my busy days end, I head home, pull up the drawbridge and cocoon with my family. Home is my favorite place of all in Houston.
About Mayor Annise Parker
Mayor Parker is Houston’s 61st mayor, one of only two women to hold the office. She is responsible for all aspects of the general management of the City and for enforcement of all laws and ordinances. A native Houstonian, she is the only person in the city’s history to hold the offices of council member, controller and mayor. In 2010, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world and she has received numerous local awards, including 2011 Guardian of the Bay Award from the Galveston Bay Foundation, Scenic Houston’s 2010 Scenic Visionary Award and the 2010 Guardian of the Human Spirit Award from the Holocaust Museum Houston. She has been with her life partner Kathy Hubbard for more than 20 years. Both advocates for adoption, they have two adopted daughters and a son.
