Martin Luther King Day 2022 Commemorations & Events in Houston
Saturday, January 15
- 26th Annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration at Children’s Museum Houston – Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with messages of unity, justice, and peace at Children’s Museum Houston. This year’s celebration includes a jazz ensemble performance, peace march, awards ceremony, and an all-day display of the “I Have a Dream” speech. $5 per person. 11am to 2pm.
- The 28th Annual MLK Grande Parade Sneak Preview at Panther Stadium − Get a sneak peek at Monday’s Midtown parade at a two-hour event showcasing participating marching bands, led by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard from Washington, DC. 1pm to 3pm..
- Songs for Justice: 2022 Annual MLK Birthday Celebration at Rothko Chapel | Virtual – Held on the actual birthday of the Reverend Doctor, Rothko Chapel will host a series of concerts and conversations that explore the role of music in shaping social justice movements and addressing today’s inequities and injustices. Pay-what-you-can with registration. 3pm.
- Black Heritage Society Hall of Fame Induction & Awards Banquet at Buffalo Soldiers National Museum – Kicking off the MLK weekend, Black Heritage Society will host their annual gala, which includes dinner and performances from students of Wisdom High School, gospel singer James Fortune, and the Famous Kashmere Reunion Stage Band. $100. 5:30pm.
Sunday, January 16
- MLK Gospel Extravaganza at Green House International (Canceled) | FREE – In Greenspoint, this house of worship hosts the Black Heritage Society and gospel artists V. Michael McKay and Rhonda McLemore for an evening of blessing in the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Free; donations welcome. 4pm.
- Inaugural MLK VIP Awards Gala at 366 SkyLounge & Event Center – At the inaugural VIP Awards ceremony from the MLK Grande Parade organization, community members will be honored for their service, while attendees can enjoy a cocktail hour, dinner and live entertainment. 5:30pm to 9:30pm.
MLK Day, Monday, January 17
- 44th Annual Original MLK Day Parade in Downtown | FREE – Black Heritage Society presents the 44th edition of the original Downtown parade, led by City of Houston dignitaries, marching bands, floats, peaceful marches and other celebrations of the civil rights leader. 10am.
- Houston MLK Festival at City Hall | FREE – In front of Downtown’s City Hall, the MLK Festival will kick off immediately following the 44th Annual parade and feature live music, kid-friendly fun, craft vendors, performances, and special guests. Ends at 5pm.
- 28th Annual MLK Grande Parade 2022 in Midtown | FREE – From the corner of San Jacinto and Elgin Streets, the Midtown area will see the 28th Annual MLK Grande Parade send floats, marching bands, dignitaries and more through the streets in celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 10am.
- 34th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Breakfast | Virtual – The Greater Houston Frontiers Club hosts their annual scholarship breakfast on Martin Luther King Day to raise funds for providing future generations with education through their commitment to service. The presentation will be aired live on KHOU 11. 9am.
