Kick off Spring Break at the Lone Star Flight Museum (LSFM) with out-of-this-world activities and demonstrations during the Spring Break Flight Plan, from Saturday, March 10 through Saturday, March 17, 2018.
Located at Ellington Airport in South Houston, the new aviation history and STEM learning facility is launching into Spring Break this weekend with opportunities for kids to meet real-life pilots, mechanics, and crew chiefs, plus a chance to participate in fun, interactive demonstrations and workshops.
The museum, which boast more than 20 actual historic aircraft, allows visitors to get an up close and personal look at what it takes to fly these impressive machines. And what’s more? You might even win a flight in one of their birds.

Spring Break Daily Flight Plan Events Schedule
- Meet the Pilots | Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 – Meet the pilots and crew chiefs who maintain and fly the museum’s vintage aircraft. Saturday 11am to 2pm; Sunday noon to 3pm.
- Mechanic Monday | Monday, March 12 – In this workshop, you’ll learn the nuts and bolts of airplane maintenance from the museum’s mechanics and crew chiefs, watch live demonstrations, tour the maintenance shop, and try your hand at turning a screw. 11am to 2pm.
- Natural Flyers | Tuesday, March 13 – Check out a whole different type of bird with the Houston Audubon Society and their birds of prey. The same forces of nature that keep planes flying also keep birds soaring. See how nature inspired aviation pioneers to develop their own wings and take to the skies. 11am and 1pm.
- Av8r Experiments | Wednesday, March 14 – Mathematician and scientist Daniel Bernoulli cracked the code on what makes flight possible in the 1700s. In this class, you’ll conduct your own Bernoulli-inspired experiments using simple materials such as balloons, string, and even a deck of cards to learn what makes aircraft lift off and stay aloft. 11am to 2pm.
- Helicopter Day | Thursday, March 15 – Head out to the ramp and check out a variety of helicopters (and meet their pilots) including Life Flight, U.S. Coast Guard, and other military helicopters. 11am to 2pm.
- Pilot Experience | Friday, March 16 – Explore the skies like a real pilot and take the controls in the Aviation Learning Center. Plan your round-trip flight, “file” an FAA flight plan, and pre-flight a real Mooney M20 Ovation aircraft. Then settle into one of the flight simulators and hit the throttle. 9:30am to 4pm.
- Drone Demo Day | Saturday, March 17 – LSFM partners with MultiGP, a global, professional, drone racing league, and the FAA for a day of live demonstrations, training, and safety tips on drones. 10am to 3pm.
About the Lone Star Flight Museum
Opened in 1985 and formerly located in Galveston, the museum began as a private collection of historic aircraft, but by 1990 had grown so significantly that the owner decided to place them on public display and convert the collection into a non-profit organization.
The move to Houston’s Ellington Airport, however, was not spurred until 2015 in an effort to avoid repeating the devastation the museum suffered at the hand of Hurricane Ike in 2008.
