See Audrey II sing and destroy civilization in “Little Shop of Horrors.“
This weekend, the final showings of Bayou City Theatrics’ “Little Shop of Horrors” as it takes to the stage at the Frenetic Theatre on Navigation in the Second Ward.
If you’ve been too busy slaving away in a flower shop on Skid Row to be familiar with the play, it’s pretty much the most popular, campy R&B sci-fi rock musical out there.
A recreation of the 1986 cult film Little Shop of Horrors directed by Frank Oz (of the Muppets and Yoda fame), the musical tells the story of sad sack Seymour Krelborn, who lives and works in the basement of a pitiful little flower shop on Skid Row. He’s in love with his co-worker Audrey, who’s too busy going out with bad boys like a sadistic dentist to take Seymour as anything other than a sweet friend. When Seymour discovers a small strange plant that needs human blood to grow… well, things take a turn for the verse (er, worse).
The show’s hit songs were written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (the same winning team later wrote the lyrics for the Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin) and features favorites such as “Skid Row (Downtown),” “Suddenly Seymour,” “Suppertime,” and of course the classic “Dentist!” (made famous by Steve Martin in the 1986 film).
The play is a production of Houston’s talented own Bayou City Theatrics, a Houston-based musical theatre company that showcases local Houston artists and cultivates local audience support.
