With the holiday season swinging into session, most author restrict their travels to the first few weeks of the month.

Hence, we’ve got 2 weeks of live literary goodness—including many opportunities to secure a personally signed book for… say for someone dear who loves Ted Lasso—leading up to the holiday.

Get to Know Your Library Card at the Evelyn Meador Branch Library | Monday, December 2 | FREE with RSVP – The Seabrook library hosts a valuable 90-minute info session in its computer lab. There’s a lot more to libraries than just checking out books. You’ll learn what your Harris County Public Libreary can do, the kinds of items you can check out and what services are available at the library. You don’t need a library card for this event, but you’ll want one when it’s over. Registration required. 11am.

Inprint Presents Rachel Kushner at the Alley Theatre  | Monday, December 2 The author reads from her new novel Creation Lake,  followed by an on-stage conversation with Houston-based writer, performer, and educator Christa M. Forster. Kushner’ is a Booker Prize Finalist and appears as part of Inprint’s Margarett Root Brown Reading Series. $5. 7:30pm.

Silent Book Club at Spring Branch Memorial Branch Library | Tuesday, December 3 – If you’ve been curious about joining a book club, but can’t quite get past being told what to read, this is for you. Come out to the library for an hour of uninterrupted reading and snacks. You can bring your own book, or grab one from the library shelves. Read whatever you like, surrounded by other bookworms. 18 and up only. 6pm.

Author Jeremy Egner at Blue Willow Bookshop | Wednesday, December 4 | FREENew York Times television editor discusses his book, Believe: The Untold Story of Ted Lasso, the Show that Kicked Its Way Into Our Hearts with Houston Chronicle senior writer Andrew Dansby. Wear Richmond FC gear to be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to Chez Kobayshi, the amazing patisserie a few doors down from Blue Willow. In order to go through the signing line, you must purchase the book from the bookshop. 7pm.

Poet E. Hughes at Kindred Stories | Thursday, December 5 | FREE with RSVP The author reads poetry from their collection Ankle-Deep in Pacific Water. The poems marry personal narrative with historical excavation to articulate the intricacies of Black familial love, life, and pain, tracing the experiences of a southern Black family and their migration to the San Francisco Bay area. 7pm. RSVP requested. Books will be available for purchase. 7pm.

Friends of the Maud Marks Library Book Sale at Maud Smith Marks Branch Library | Saturday, December 7 | FREE – Find a large selection of hardback fiction and nonfiction, as well as children’s books and paperbacks—all at rock bottom prices—at this used book sale in Katy benefiting library programs. 10am to 4pm.

Public Poetry Reading at the Houston Public Library African American History Center | Saturday, December 7 | FREE with RSVP – Find a creative mix of poets and artists sharing their works. Everyone is welcome and participants are invited to read a piece on open mic​. Registration is required. 2pm to 4pm.

Author Alex Segura at Murder by the Book | Tuesday, December 10 | FREE The bestselling author of Secret Identity discusses his new novel, Alter Ego—a clever and escapist standalone sequel set in the world of comic books—with Abby Endler. The event is free, but if you want any books signed by the author, they must be purchased from the bookstore. 6:30pm.

Author Jeremy Eichler at The Menil Collection | Wednesday, December 11 | FREE DaCamera hosts an evening blending words and music, where Eichler will discuss Time’s Echo: Music, Memory and the Second World War, in conversation with DaCaera’s pianist and artistic director, Sarah Rothenberg. DaCamera Young Artists perform Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor. 7:30pm.

Writespace Fantasy Book Ball at Sabine Street Studios | Saturday, December 14 – Bask in an evening of food, music, drinks and books at a festive party, featuring readings and performances. $40 and up. 7pm.
