Our My Top 5 feature showcases Houstonians who are shaping the culture in the city and impacting people’s lives. In turn, they share their own favorite things to do in Houston when they’re not hard at work. This week, we’re very pleased to feature Cindy Hide, the author, educator, family law attorney and speaker behind Love, Money & the Law. This week, on Wednesday, January 29, she’ll be presenting her first of three fascinating sessions of her Heart to Heart workshops, which explore key strategies for building successful relationships, while managing money and legal matters as they relate to coupling.

My Top 5 Things to Do in Houston

by Cindy Hide

  1. Getting exercise – I love yoga whenever I have the chance to enjoy a guided class. I just discovered The Breathing Room and hope to spend more time there. It’s such a cool space. I also enjoy my trips to LA Fitness on Richmond where I can hop in the whirlpool to relax or take a quick swim. It’s one of the few places in Houston where there’s an indoor lap pool.
  2. Dining out – I like to dine where the menu leans toward a variety of vegetarian dishes, and that includes Indian and Mediterranean. I hope more places will soon include organic wines on the menu. Their flavor and lack of additives is such a plus. One of my favorite spots is True Food Kitchen on Post Oak and San Felipe where I understand that Oprah has an interest, which is kinda cool to know (they’ve got organic wine selections, too). And it wouldn’t be Houston without Chuy’s Tex-Mex. Just plain yum and very affordable to boot. It’s wonderful to live in a city where we have so many options and new restaurants opening all the time.
  3. Memorial Park One other thing I enjoy is a trek to Memorial Park. The conservancy has done such a great job of developing this resource for Houston. I understand it’s one of the biggest parks in the country, the acreage being nearly twice as large as Central Park in New York. The city has lots of great plans in the works over the next several years and I’m really looking forward to its expansion and development.
  4. The Theater District Then there’s the arts to enjoy. I especially enjoy dance, because it prompts me to reminisce about once upon a time when I was studying dance at the Houston Jazz Ballet with Patrick Swayze when his mom Patsy, had her studio. I was there when Lisa Neimi walked in for the first time and he fell in love at first sight. The rest is history. I no longer take classes except for some ballroom every now and then, but I always appreciate Houston’s great performances and guest artists that grace the stages of The Theater District
  5. iPic Theater Another favorite in Houston is the iPic Movie Theater. The cozy chairs, the warm blankets, and service while watching a flick is always a treat. Afterwards, I like to step out to shop in the River Oaks District or grab a bite at one of their many delicious places to eat.
