Acclaimed authors are in the city to sign their latest, and Houston’s literary and arts organizations come together for some original programming around books.

Top Book & Author Events in Houston: March 2024
- Public Poetry Reading Series at Alief-David M. Henington Regional Library | Saturday, March 2 | FREE – Four local poets will read their work at the Alief neighborhood library. During the program’s intermission there is an open mic, where participants can share their own poems. 2pm to 4pm.
- David Shannon at Blue Willow Bookshop | Tuesday, March 5 | FREE – The children’s author comes to Houston to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his popular picture book, No, David! Beloved for its message about a young boy named David who struggles to make good choices amid a constant refrain of “no, David,” the book has delighted a generation of young readers all too familiar with the pitfalls of childhood. Free to attend; books for signing must be purchased from the bookstore. 5pm.
- Book Sale at Maud Marks Smith Library | Saturday, March 9 | No Cover – Bookworms will love this fundraiser for the Katy area library, where they can browse and buy a large selection of fiction, nonfiction and children’s titles in both hardcover and paperback. Those wishing to increase their home libraries should attend. 10am to 4pm.
- Little BIPOC Book Fest at Discovery Green | Saturday, March 9 | FREE – Children ages 3 to 10 can explore diverse books featuring Black, Indigenous and People of Color experiences. The celebration includes a unique Storybook Opera performance, readings from local authors, arts and crafts, free books and lots of family fun. 10:30am to 2:30pm.
- Jacky Fisher at Brazos Bookstore | Thursday, March 14 | FREE – The CEO talks about her book, The Growth Paradox: Rethinking Control, Accountability & Change to Move Your Business to the Next Level. She’ll examine her industry-disrupting, signature management method aimed at helping small business owners avoid the pitfalls that are most destructive to a company’s growth. Free to attend; books for signing must be purchased from the bookstore. 6:30pm.
- Writespace presents Art in the A.M. at Rothko Chapel | Saturday, March 16 | FREE – Meet up with fellow writers at the famed landmark in Montrose. You’ll be given a writing prompt and can then explore the chapel and grounds, free to meditate on the prompt and write at your own pace. You can then share your work and listen to others. Registration requested. 10am to 11:30am.
- Kindred Stories presents Michael Arceneaux at the DeLuxe Theater | Tuesday, March 19 – The Houston native and author of I Can’t Date Jesus and I Don’t Want to Die Poor comes back home to talk about his latest book, I Finally Bought Some Jordans, a collection of essays and observations exploring how far he’s come—and how far is left to go—as a Black man in a patriarchal, heteronormative society. Expect a lively, insightful conversation laced with Arceneaux’s trademark wit and observations. $35; includes a copy of the book. 7pm.
- Gulf Coast Reading Series at Lawndale Art Center | Friday, March 22 | FREE – Join authors Allegra Hyde, Madeleine Gaudin, El Williams III and Pritha Bhattacharyya as they read from their latest works. Please note masks will be required for this indoors event. 7pm.
- Houston Thrillers Panel at Murder by the Book | Saturday, March 23 | FREE – Four Houston area–based authors discuss their work and process in this panel celebrating our local writing talent. Kristen Bird (Watch it Burn), Chris Cander (The Young and Other Animals), Nishita Parekh (The Night of the Storm) and Alison Wisdom (The Burning Season) talk about their work and process, and will sign copies of their books. Free to attend; but books for signing must be purchased from the bookstore. 3pm.
