Make the most of your week with our top festivals, events, and things to do this week in Houston from Monday, June 17 to Sunday, June 23, 2024.

This week offers many ways to celebrate Juneteenth, plus three events that coincide on Friday; summer solstice, international day of yoga, and Make Music Day in Houston.

  • Juneteenth Elevated Kickback Experience at Freedmen’s Town Visitor Center | Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19 | FREE – Held at the brand new Visitor Center in historic Fourth Ward, this Juneteenth celebration features cuisine from across the African Diaspora, dance performances, live music and DJ, and art from the renowned This Way exhibition. 4pm to 8pm.
  • Juneteenth Family Fun Day at Reedy Chapel AME | Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19 | FREE – The historic Reedy Chapel AME church hosts a free community block party with food, games, prizes and more for families and those celebrating Juneteenth. Then, cap off the 159th Juneteenth by taking part in a historic reenactment of the emancipation march from the Chapel to the Galveston Courthouse to hear General Order No. 3, declaring “all slaves are free!” Block party from 1pm to 6pm; march event from 6pm to 8pm.
  • DIIV in Concert at White Oak Music Hall | Wednesday, June 19 – The band known for their dream pop vibes and shoegaze sound comes to White Oak for a night of songs from their latest, Frog in Boiling Water. $32. 7pm.
  • Ice House Radio at Brasil | Wednesday, June 19 to Friday, June 21 | FREE – The roving DJ broadcast opens a new weekly residency this summer on the prime patio at Brasil Cafe in Montrose. The Department of Black Phenomena kick things off on Juneteenth, followed by a Thursday show with DJ Cold One, Duane Bradley, Dusty Tombs and Whitney Screwston. Then, on Friday, catch Nengo Zuniga, Alikhan, and Noey Lopez to round out the first week of shows. 7pm to 11pm.
  • Catastrophic Theatre presents Tamarie’s Texas Toast! at MATCH | Thursday, June 20 | Ongoing – It’s not summer without the annual chaos from the mind of Tamarie Cooper. This year’s show finds Cooper and her merry maniacs delivering a production as big as the Lone Star State. Expect references to high school football, gas station beavers, flag parades, giant roaches, tons of guns, the glory of Whataburger and so much more. This production runs through Saturday, August 3. Pay-what-you-can. Showtimes vary.

  • Apollo Chamber Players presents Summer Solstice at Rothko Chapel | Friday, June 21 – Celebrate the sun and welcome the return of the midsummer light with meditative new and traditional music at Houston’s monument of peace. Pay-what-you-can; suggested donation of $10 to $25. 8am and noon.
  • International Day of Yoga at Discovery Green | Friday, June 21 | FREE – This annual summer solstice event brings an evening of yoga to Discovery Green, in addition to Bollywood dancing, performances by advanced yogis, and a labyrinth walk, presented by the Counsel General of India. 6pm to 9pm.
  • Make Music Day with Houston Heights Brass at Eastern Glades at Memorial Park | Friday, June 21 | FREE – Part of a global celebration of music, Houston Heights Brass brings to Eastern Glades a fusion of different eras and styles, ranging from Bach to jazz to contemporary pop. 7pm.
  • Lilly Palmer DJ Set Noto Houston | Friday, June 21 – The East End nightclub celebrates its first birthday with an all-night banger from Lilly Palmer on the decks. $25 and up. 10pm.
  • Cyclone of Memories: An AstroWorld Exhibition at Houston Toy Museum | Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23 – Relive memories of Houston’s beloved bygone theme park in a display of souvenirs, memorabilia, photographs and collectibles that span from 1967 to 2005, with many rare items never seen by the general public. $14; $10 for ages 65+; kids pay their age up to 13. Noon to 6pm.

  • Houston Astros vs. Baltimore Orioles at Minute Maid Park | Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23 – One of the league’s top teams comes to Houston for the weekend, and early arriving fans have a chance to snag giveaways like a throwback Bregman jersey and a Kyle Tucker bobblehead, plus a celebration of princesses on Sunday. $25 and up. Times vary.
  • Houston’s New Faces of Pride Festival & Parade at Houston City Hall | Saturday, June 22 | FREE – A new addition to the Pride festivities this year, this all-day festival features hundreds of vendors, performances by Billy Gilman, Lauren Sanderson and Chris Housman, plus an evening parade through the streets of Downtown. Parade viewing is free; festival is $3. Festival is noon to 6pm; Parade begins at 7:30pm.
  • Classic Albums Live: Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Saturday, June 22 | FREE – Post up on the Hermann hill to hear the iconic 1967 Jimi Hendrix album, Are You Experienced?, note-for-note when Classic Albums Live brings the record to the Miller Outdoor stage. 8:30pm.
  • ImagineNation Kid Expo at Katy Merrell Center | Saturday, June 22 & Sunday, June 23 – This two-day expo in Katy is all about the kiddos with a chance to meet TV and video game characters, hands-on activities, face painting and balloon artists, crafts, a vendor marketplace, puppet and magic shows, and much more. $10, valid for both days. Free for ages 3 and under. 10am to 6pm.
  • Hotter Than Hell Big Day Birding Competition on Galveston Island | Sunday, June 23 – This fast-paced, semi-competitive race sees which teams can identify the most bird species in Galveston County across a 12- or 24-hour period. Participants will help build citizen science data on eBird during one of the least birded times of the year. Tickets are $100 per team. Noon to midnight, or noon to noon on the following day.
