- Broadway Across America presents Funny Girl at Hobby Center | Tuesday, August 20 to Sunday, August 25 – With one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, plus an updated book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, this musical tells the story of the legendary Fanny Brice, who rose from the Lower East Side of New York to stardom. Featuring songs like “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “People,” it’s a show beloved the world over for decades. $35 and up. Showtimes vary.
- Stages presents Sister’s Summer School Catechism: God Never Takes a Vacation at the Gordy | Tuesday, August 20 to Sunday, August 25 – Denise Fennell-Pasqualone is back as the irrepressible and irascible Sister, in the latest outing of the popular series. This time, she’s teaching a summer school session to a bunch of kids who goofed off in catechism class all year—and she’s not happy about it. - Back to School Bash at Feges BBQ | Wednesday, August 21 | FREE – The Spring Branch barbecue hotspot hosts its annual family-friendly bash with a build-your-own-dirt-pie station and play area, plus housemade sausage corn dogs, and complimentary ice cream for every kids meal. Ages 12 and under eat free. 5pm to 9pm.
- Future & Metro Boomin at Toyota Center | Thursday, August 22 – Future and the Grammy-nominated producer Metro Boomin keep the summer hot when they bring music from their recent collab to H-Town on the We Trust You Tour. $49 and up. 8pm.
- Phat Cat Swinger & the Wonderful World of Swing at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Friday, August 23 | FREE – Come out to Hermann Park to enjoy 90 minutes of original arrangements of Disney music. Expect swing, cha cha, and mambo to classics like “Wish Upon a Star” from Pinocchio, “Be Prepared” from The Lion King, “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, “Bella Notte” from Lady and the Tramp, and more. 8:30pm.
- Performing Arts Houston presents 5th Annual Mariachi Festival at Wortham Center | Friday, August 23 to Sunday, August 25 – Celebrate the creativity and enduring legacy of Mariachi music and Hispanic culture as this popular festival brings some of the biggest names in the genre to Houston, including Mariachi Mariposas, Mariachi 7 Leguas, and others from Houston and Mexico. $19 and up. - Chris Stapleton in Concert at Minute Maid Park | Saturday, August 24 – The All-American Road Show rolls through Houston when country superstar Chris Stapleton brings Miranda Lambert & Grace Potter to the juicebox for a night of country music magic. $44.95 and up. 6pm.
- Hidden Gems Country Music Fest at 8th Wonder | Saturday, August 24 | No Cover – This evening of music from up-and-coming Texas country music stars Mason Lively and Dustin De La Garza takes place under the stars in the brewery biergarten. Be among the first to hear these stars of tomorrow. 6pm to 10pm.
- NFL Preseason: Houston Texans vs. LA Rams at NRG Stadium | Saturday, August 24 – In the Texans’ last home game of the preseason, the star-studded Rams from Los Angeles come to town for one final test. $40 and up. Noon.
- TisaKorean in Concert at House of Blues | Saturday, August 24 – The Houston rapper and producer hits the House of Blues with special guests while on a week-long tour that spans the country. $13 and up. 7pm.
- RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Live at 713 Music Hall | Saturday, August 24 – This summer show brings some of the biggest fan-favorites of the hit drag competition show to the Houston stage. Expect fabulous performances by Angeria, Gottmilk, Roxxxy Andrews, Vanessa Vanjie and more. $42 and up. 8pm.
- Apollo Chamber Players presents Mekong Soul at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Saturday, August 24 | FREE – This performance of music and dance tells three powerful and multi-sensory stories about life on the Mekong River of Southeast Asia. Told with spoken word and moving images, it’s an approachable exploration of multiple artistic styles. 8:00pm.
- National Battle of the Bands at NRG Stadium | Sunday, August 25 – Kicking off the fall marching band season, this annual competition sees the country’s top bands battling it out on the Texans’ gridiron. TSU’s Ocean of Soul Marching Band highlights the lineup, alongside seven other HBCU programs. $15 and up. 3:30pm.
