Top 10 Things To Do for Kids & Families in Houston This Month: August 2022

  • Jurassic Quest at NRG Center | Thursday, August 4 to Sunday, August 7 – Walk among the nation’s biggest herd of life-size, animatronic dinosaurs when Jurassic Quest arrives at NRG Center. From the largest predators, such as the mighty T-Rex, to playful baby dinos, experience them as they were when they roamed the earth billions of years ago. Friends and family are invited to explore fossil digs, jump into science and art activities, enjoy inflatable attractions, and more at this one-of-a-kind dinosaur event. $22 for ages 2 and up; $19 for ages 65+; $36 for an unlimited pass to all rides and activities for ages 2 to 12. Times vary.
  • Tax-Free Weekend at Memorial City Mall | Friday, August 5 to Sunday, August 7 – Memorial City offers extended shopping hours and back-to-school giveaways during Texas’ official Tax-Free Weekend. For these three days, shoppers can save on everything they need for back-to-school, with many stores offering additional special sales—plus, try your hand at winning a backpack filled with school supplies and gift cards every half hour from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday. Shopping hours are 10am to 9pm on Friday and Saturday; 10am to 8pm on Sunday.
  • Food Truck Friday: Wall-E Movie Screening at Oyster Creek Park in Sugar Land | Friday, August 12 | FREE – Pull out a blanket and chairs for a fun-filled evening in Sugar Land. Kick off the night with dinner or dessert from local food trucks, then cuddle up for a screening of Disney’s 2008 animated film, Wall-E, under the stars. 6pm to 9pm.
  • YMCA Kids Duathlon at Holcomb Family YMCA | Saturday, August 13 – Kiddos ages 7 to 15 are invited to register for this duathlon in Spring, which will have participants competing in three segments that feature run and bike legs. Registration is $42, closing on Tuesday, August 9. 7:30am.
  • Mayor’s Back 2 School Event at George R. Brown Convention Center | Saturday, August 13 | FREE – The annual back-to-school fest offers families of Houston-area elementary school students a chance to prepare for the return to the hallways with a school supply and backpack distribution. 8am to 2pm, until supplies last.
  • Parent & Child: A Pizza Party at Central Market | Sunday, August 14 – Team up as a parent with up to two children for a morning cooking class that will teach you to make pizza dough from scratch, craft a simple and tasty pizza sauce, and toss a delicious pie for lunch. $50 and up. 11am.
  • Jump Jump Kids Festival at Bayou City Event Center | Sunday, August 14 – More than 30 bounce houses come together in South Houston for an afternoon of local vendors doling out snow cones and shaved ices, plus burgers, ice cream, and more. All day passes start at $20. 1pm to 9pm.
  • AIA Sandcastle Competition at East Beach in Galveston | Saturday, August 20 – The annual sandcastle competition returns to Galveston for its 35th year, featuring sand masterpieces carefully crafted by teams along categories like pop culture, kids board games, Americana, space race, and more—all vying for the coveted Gold Bucket Award. Free, though parking at East Beach is $15 (cash only). 9am to 5pm.
  • Kidz Bop Live in Concert at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion | Thursday, August 25 – The music group just for kids brings family-friendly covers of popular hits to the stage in the Woodlands, plus the fan-favorite Daddy Dance Off gives fathers a chance to show off their best moves on stage to a mashup of Y2K hits. $29.50 and up. 7pm.
  • Comic Conroe at Lone Star Convention Center | Friday, August 26 to Sunday, August 28 – Seek out some of your favorite characters from the worlds of comics and pop culture at Conroe’s epic convention that features a cosplay costume contest, autograph sessions with voice actors like Adassa (better known as Dolores Madrigal from Encanto), and shop from local vendors. $15 and up; $40 for a weekend pass. Times vary.
