  • Brazil Samba Jazz: Raquel Cepeda & Marvio Ciribelli at Hobby Center | Friday & Saturday – Be part of this intimate cabaret that spotlights the sensual and energizing rhythms of Brazil, with a lineup of performers featuring top talent from Houston and beyond. $58 and up. 7pm.
  • Comedian Ian Bagg at Houston Improv | Friday & Saturday – The comic placed in the finals of NBC’s Last Comic Standing and has made appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show. His fast-paced multi-direction show prompts may guests to catch more than one show over a single weekend. $25 and up. Times vary.
  • Island Vybz Reggae Fest at Beach Central in Galveston | Friday & Saturday – Head to the heart of the island along the seawall for a two-day celebration of Caribbean culture, music, and community spirit. $20 for a single day; $25 for both days. Times vary.
  • Weekend Comedy Showcase at The Riot Comedy Club | Friday & Saturday – The Riot presents a talented lineup of comedians across four weekend shows at the comedy stage above Rudyard’s in Montrose. $17 and up. Times vary.
  • The Crimson Vagabond Roadshow at MATCH | Friday & Saturday – Celebrating its 12th anniversary, expect performances, a drum jam and an open dance floor. Enjoy an exciting night of shopping, shimmies and shreds in the heart of Houston’s art scene celebrating with your fellow Roadies, friends and fans. $30 and up. Times vary
  • Houston Astros vs. Arizona Diamondbacks at Minute Maid Park | Friday to Sunday – Cheers on the home team downtown as they welcome visitors from Arizona for three games over the weekend. $18 and up. Times vary. 
  • Tattoo & Body Art Expo at NRG Center | Friday to Sunday – The World Famous Tattoo and Body Art Expo Super Show 2024 features more than 250 of America’s best artists tattooing on-site. $20. Times vary.
  • Paris, Texas Movie Screening at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston | Friday to Sunday – This powerful statement on codes of masculinity and the myth of the American family marks its 40th anniversary. Starring Harry Dean Stanton and Dean Stockwell it’s an exploration of a vast, crumbling landscape of canyons and neon. $9. Times vary.
  • Galveston Island Car Show at Moody Gardens | Saturday & Sunday – Head to the Island, where you can immerse yourself in a dazzling array of vehicles, explore diverse vendors, and take advantage of exclusive hotel packages. $10 and up. Times vary.
  • Katy Home Improvement Expo at the Merrell Center | Saturday & Sunday | FREE – Get inspo for everything from kitchen and bathroom remodels to outdoor living spaces, with curated exhibitors bringing the tools and inspiration to transform your house into the home of your dreams. Times vary.
  • Japan Festival at Hermann Park | Saturday & Sunday | FREE – The popular annual festival returns, bringing with it the culture and history of Japan. This year’s festival coincides with MFAH’s Meiji Modern: Fifty Years of New Japan, celebrating the four remarkable Meiji decades that propelled Japan into the modern era. 10am to 6pm.

Thursday, September 5, 2024

  • First Thursday Block Party at Mid Main – Enjoy beer from Saint Arnold, live music, art exhibits, food, and local vendors at an after-work weekend kickoff benefiting CAMH. $10. 6pm to 10pm.
  • The Tunnel Opening Night at Discovery Green | FREE – Creator Paul Magnuson of Big Art discusses the interactive temporary art installation’s creation as well as his other exciting art projects. The evening begins with drinks and mingling, followed by the discussion. RSVP required. The Tunnel will be on view nightly through Sunday, October 6, 2024. 6pm to 8pm. 
  • Code Talkers of WWI & WWII: A Lasting Legacy at Houston Museum of Natural Science – Learn about the fascinating history of the Comanche code talkers, who played a vital role in military success. Dr. William C. Meadows, head of the Missouri State Native American Studies Committee leads the discussion as part of National Code Talkers Day. $18. 6:30pm.
  • Des Hommes Movie Screening at Alliance Française de Houston – The organization hosts a screening of this 2020 film starring Gérard Depardieu about a group of men called to Algeria in the 1960s, a period of turbulence. Forty years later, the past they cannot outrun catches up to them. $10. 7pm.
  • Bilmuri in Concert at White Oak Music Hall – The indie-pop/post-hardcore act takes the stage at the Heights venue. Since the release of Jaguar Shark in 2016, the singer has drawn inspo from neon pop-punk, with hardcore and emo music influences. $25. 7pm.
  • Kaitlin Butts in Concert at The Heights Theater – The country singer-songwriter brings her Oklahoma twang and storytelling chops to Houston as part of her world tour. With songs like “Hunt You Down” and “Marfa Lights,” she’s garnered legions of fans across the country and around the world. $20 and up. 7pm.
  • Author Luis Miranda at Blue Willow Bookshop | FREE – The political strategist, philanthropist, advocacy consultant—and dad to Lin-Manuel Miranda—comes to Houston to discuss his latest book, Relentless: My Story of the Latino Voice that is Transforming America. He’ll be in conversation with KHOU-11 reporter Anayeli Ruiz. RSVP required. 7pm.
  • Shotgun Road in Concert at Heritage Park | FREE – Conroe hosts a concert in the park, featuring the Houston-based band singing country hits from the ’80s and ’90s. Expect an evening of country nostalgia as the band plays your favorites by some of the genre’s biggest names. 7pm to 8:30pm.
  • Pulse of a People: Jalen Baker’s Jazz Quintet at Alta Arts Space – Be among the first to hear this new suite of music based on the happenings, culture and importance of the Black communities of Houston’s Third, Fourth, and Fifth Wards—performed by a nine-piece ensemble that includes both The Jalen Baker Jazz Quintet and The Apollo Chamber Players. $35. 7:30pm. 
  • Summer Salt in Concert at White Oak Music Hall – The Heights-area venue welcomes the indie folk act from Austin. With breezy harmonies and pop flourishes, the group is known for offering a fresh musical perspective on the folk genre, while offering familiar vibes. $28 and up. 8pm.

  • Mommy Mingle Fridays at Children’s Museum Houston – HCM hosts a morning of free coffee, breakfast snacks, and the chance to mingle with fellow parents while immersing in the delightful world of Tot Spot. $19.95. 10am to Noon.
  • Lego Night at Decant Urban Winery – The Houston Toy Museum partners with the winery for this evening of creation and fun. Select from more than 20 different sets as you build and spend time with old and new friends. $9.99 and up. 5pm to 9pm.
  • Sunset Bingo at Levy Park – Bring family and friends and daub your way to great prizes in the Upper Kirby park. You can also enjoy tunes from DJ Del Sur, making this a great way to kick off your Friday night. Admission buys eight bingo games. $10. 5pm.
  • Do Ho Suh: In Process Opening Reception at Moody Center for the Arts | FREE – Head over to Rice University for the first presentation of its kind by the internationally renowned artist. YOu’ll experience the methodologies by which Suh iterates on ideas, engages experts from diverse fields, and expresses complex themes through the physical manifestations of his artistic practice. 6pm to 8pm.
  • Indo-American Association presents Ibadat…Voice Within at Hobby Center – This concert incorporates influences from Indian and Western music, performed by powerhouse talent Sonam Kalra. The Sufi singer is known for blending many faith voices to create a larger whole. $30 and up. 6pm.
  • Late Fridays at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – This new initiative lets you kick off your weekend at the MFAH, with happy hour, strolling the galleries, special programs and more. This means the museum is open late twice a week, giving you more time to explore. $24. 6pm to 9pm.
  • Nothing More in Concert at Bayou Music Center – Come out to hear the hard rock band from San Antonio known for songs like “House on Sand” and “If It Doesn’t Hurt.” Sputnik Music called the group’s vocals “intense and dramatic.” $52 and up. 6pm.
  • The Restoration Talk at Czech Center Museum Houston | FREE – The museum dives into the background of art pieces and the techniques and challenges involved in preserving works of art. Rachel Townsend and Lauren Enyart from Bradley’s Art & Frame host this discussion. 6pm to 7pm.
  • Santana Draper Pro Boxing Debut at RedOwl Boxing Arena – Boxer Santana Draper makes his professional debut at BoxFest X at RedOwl Boxing Arena. The milestone event will be an evening of intense matchups, showcasing the sport’s rising stars. $48.56. 7pm to midnight.
  • Galactic Empire in Concert at Warehouse Live Midtown – The cult sensation known for its guitar-heavy metal reinterpretations of classic and modern Star Wars theme, mostly written by John Williams, alters the deal in a fan-pleasing show in Midtown. $25. 6:30pm.
  • Houston PetSet’s Fierce & Fabulous Soirée at The Post Oak Hotel – This upscale evening honors 20 Houstonians who have greatly impacted animal welfare. There’s also a live performance from the Grammy-nominated country star Pat Green. $5,000 and up. 6:30pm.
  • Musiqa presents Meijii Modern: Fifty Years of New Japan at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – Inspired by the exhibit of the same name, this concert features music by koto player Sumie Kaneko and the Musiqa ensemble. Expect an evening of songs showcasing styles of Japanese composition and influence. $24; included with museum admission. 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
  • Beetlejuice Movie Screening at SpindleTap Brewery | FREE – Bring the whole family to this free screening of the 1988 Tim Burton classic. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. 7pm.
  • DaCamera presents Endea Owens & The Cookout in Concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre | FREE – One of jazz’s most vibrant emerging artists, Owens graduated from Julliard and immediately became part of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert house band, Stay Human. Her work has been featured in Judas and the Black Messiah, and she’s the winner of Emmy, Grammy and George Foster Peabody awards. 8pm.
  • Comedian Jo Koy at Toyota Center – One of today’s premiere stand-up comics takes the stage downtown. You know him from his appearances as a frequent panelist on E!’s late night show Chelsea Lately, and his six comedy specials released by Comedy Central and Netflix. $49.50 and up. 8pm.
  • Six Gun Sound in Concert at Post Houston – The high-energy Bad Company tribute band performs on the rooftop, treating audiences to an evening of the band’s most-loved songs. Whether you “Feel LIke Making Love Tonight” or want a “Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy,” this is a night of favorite hits. $20. 8pm to 10pm.
  • King George & Calvin Richardson in Concert at Arena Theatre – The R&B singer comes to Houston as part of the “Ladies Choice” concert series. Known for “Don’t Let Me Be Blind” and “Treat Her RIght,” it’s sure to be an evening of soulful melodies. $69.50 and up. 8:30pm.
