Dive into everything you need to know about the newest playgrounds and park spaces at the Commons at Hermann Park.
The long-awaited revitalization of Hermann Park‘s southwest corner has finally opened to the public, unveiling 26 acres of reimagined green space and play areas now known as the Commons. Following a two-year renovation, this once-overlooked section of the historic park now offers a wealth of new amenities for visitors of all ages.
Highlights include a completely redone playground, plus the addition of a classic carousel and a sprawling splash pad perfect for cooling off on hot Houston days. Younger children can take to the safe play options in the wooded area known as the Thicket, while the older set can conquer the slides and rocket-themed structures of the Space Adventure zone.

Nearby, the expansive Central Lawn invites relaxation and casual outdoor sports, while the shaded Live Oak Terrace provides lounge seating under a canopy of trees.
A range of other enriching enhancements help launch this area’s vital reconnection to Hermann Park, including a gorilla-themed play area and interactive zones that explore Houston’s bayou and native wildlife, alongside new picnic areas and food options at the revamped Historic Fannin Pavilion.
With so many new additions, the Commons is poised to become a bustling hub of activity and community within the larger Hermann Park grounds.

- Memorial Hermann Hospital/Houston Zoo – The closest stop to the southwest corner of Hermann Park provides direct access to the Commons.
- Hermann Park/Rice U – Entering near the Japanese Garden, the Commons area will be south of here toward Cambridge Street. At that entrance, Sunset Station services the Hermann Park train.

Hopping on the Hermann Park Railroad
No matter how you get there, the Hermann Park Railroad can cruise you around the expansive park space, with stops at Kinder Station, as well as three substations around the park:
