Journey through the life and myth of Mansa Musa, one of the wealthiest people in human history, at a free, outdoor film screening of the documentary short, Sun of the Soil, on the Menil Collection lawn on Friday, April 23, 2021.

Menil Collection is continuing its series of free, outdoor film screenings with Sun of the Soil, a 2020 documentary short film that centers on Mansa Musa, ruler of the largest kingdom in West Africa during the 14th century and, through the production of gold in Mali, he is thought to be one of the wealthiest figures in all of human history.

Directed by Joe Penney and written by Ladan Osman, the film follows Malian artist Abdou Ouologuem’s exploration of the myth and history of Mansa Musa, as well as deeper insights into contemporary life in Mali.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic blankets or lawn chairs. Seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis.
