Experience more than 5,000 years of Chinese culture and civilization as Shen Yun returns to Houston’s Jones Hall with their 2014 showcase from Monday, December 23, 2013 through Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
Shen Yun Performing Arts calls on millennia of Chinese dance and musical traditions to present a stunning exhibition of China’s great culture and history. Dressed in dazzling costumes, dancers perform to the music of a live orchestra in front of eye-catchingly animated backdrops.
Classical Chinese dance shares a common ancestry with martial arts. Dramatic jumping, spinning, and flipping techniques are only part of the vast repertoire of movements that have made classical Chinese dance one of the most demanding and expressive art forms in the world.
Interestingly enough, the New York-based Shen Yun has earned standing ovations in its performances around the world, however the group has not been able to perform in China itself. The company states that 60 years of Communist government there have suppressed such celebrations of Chinese culture and heritage.
