Witness the world premiere of a tribute to a Turkish icon and more in ROCO’s In Concert series finale, The Wrestler, at The Church of St. John the Divine on Saturday, May 4, 2019.
Wrapping up ROCO’s In Concert series, The Wrestler sends listeners on a musical journey with four evocative pieces weaving together the emotional highs and lows of sport – to cap off their 14th season, celebrating “Games People Play.”
The Wrestler features the world premiere of Houston-based composer Erberk Eryilmaz’s Wrestling Airs for Two Davuls and Chamber Orchestra (in memory of Koca Yusuf), honoring the legendary 19th century wrestler in a musical depiction of the festivity, drama, and sound of a traditional Turkish oil wrestling match.
Conductor David Danzmayr returns to the ROCO podium for The Wrestler, with three additional works including Jocelyn Morlock’s ethereal Solace for strings, Samuel Barber’s Toccata Festiva featuring Grammy-winning organist Paul Jacobs, and Brian Newbould’s reconstruction of Franz Schubert’s haunting, unfinished Symphony No. 10.
