Trace the paths of infectious diseases through society and see how we can prevent a future pandemic in the new experiential exhibit Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World at The Health Museum, on view from Saturday, October 5, 2019 through Sunday, May 31, 2020.
Created by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World examines the origins of pathogens, how they spread, and the ways to address them in a world where humans, animals, and the environment have deep, intricate connections.
Along the way, visitors will also get a glimpse at how the Greater Houston region dealt with three major outbreaks; the plague, polio, and HIV.
A mockup of a real-life pandemic response—complete with HAZMAT equipment and staging—will serve as the dramatic entrance to the very real world of life-threatening potential outbreaks. To highlight the intimately connected relationship between human, animal and environmental health, a section of the exhibition will also feature bats and the risks most commonly associated with them and other wildlife.
Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World will be on view from Saturday, October 5, 2019 through Sunday, May 31, 2020.
