Trace the paths of infectious diseases through society and see how we can prevent a future pandemic in the new experiential exhibit Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World at The Health Museumon view from Saturday, October 5, 2019 through Sunday, May 31, 2020.

Created by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World examines the origins of pathogens, how they spread, and the ways to address them in a world where humans, animals, and the environment have deep, intricate connections.

Along the way, visitors will also get a glimpse at how the Greater Houston region dealt with three major outbreaks; the plague, polio, and HIV.

A mockup of a real-life pandemic responsecomplete with HAZMAT equipment and stagingwill serve as the dramatic entrance to the very real world of life-threatening potential outbreaks. To highlight the intimately connected relationship between human, animal and environmental health, a section of the exhibition will also feature bats and the risks most commonly associated with them and other wildlife.

Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World will be on view from Saturday, October 5, 2019 through Sunday, May 31, 2020.
