On Mondays, our My Top 5 series highlights a Houstonian who is shaping the culture of the city, and reveals how they like to explore Houston in their free time. This week, we’re pleased to feature a special Theater District edition, including Sara Webb, a dancer with Houston Ballet. This three-part My Top 5 celebrates the free 24th annual Theater District Open House happening on Sunday, August 27, 2017.
My Top 5 Things to Do in Houston

- Vintage Park – My family and I live in northwest Houston, and nearby Vintage Park is home to unique shops and some of our favorite restaurants, including the original Peli Peli, an El Tiempo, Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt, and my favorite cupcake shop, Treat! It’s family friendly with live music by the fountain in its main plaza. The Vintage area is still growing, so there are many new places to check out every time we go.
- Houston’s green spaces – We are lucky in Houston to have so many interesting parks. When we are Downtown, Discovery Green is the preferred hangout for my kids. In our neck of the woods, we like Meyer Park and Collins Park, which is next door to our favorite library, the Barbara Bush Branch of the Harris County Public Library. Near and dear to my heart is the Fallen Warriors Memorial in Cy-Champ Park, where the names of all Texans who have sacrificed their lives for us in the War on Terror are etched in stone.
- Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo – This is a family tradition for us and an opportunity to refresh our Texan roots each year. We make an annual pilgrimage to Cavender’s Boot City to get our family ready for Go Texan Day, then wear the same outfits to the Rodeo. It’s a great chance to learn more about the importance of agriculture to our city and state, as well as the history of what it means to be a Texan.
- The Museum District – I feel like we’ve only just scratched the surface of our amazing Museum District. We are members at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Houston Zoo, and the Children’s Museum of Houston, where our kids have experienced some awesome summer camps and we enjoy time off together as a family. We also love the new McGovern Centennial Gardens and have spent some time at Miller Outdoor Theatre over the past 20 years — on stage and off!
- The Houston LDS Temple – I love that Houston is so welcoming and accepting of all cultures and religions. We are a wonderfully diverse city with many inspiring places of worship and reflection. The LDS Temple in northwest Houston is a special one for me, and all are welcome to enjoy its peaceful grounds and beautiful architecture.
About Sara Webb
Sara Webb is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada, and came to Houston in 1996, following her formal dance training at the HARID Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida. She joined Houston Ballet in 1997 and has been a principal dancer with the company since 2003. Sara lives in the Champions area in Northwest Houston with her husband Ryan, an Iraq War veteran, and their three children, Joshua, Lillian, and Luciana. She has performed all over the world, but Houston remains her favorite place to dance.
The Houston Ballet is one of the organizations taking part in the 24th Annual Theater District Open House on Sunday, August 27, from noon to 5pm. This free event, which kicks off the fall performing arts season in Houston, is a one-day-only opportunity to experience the energy and excitement of Houston’s Theater District.
