Stop in at Art League Houston to inspect, and gather under, Monica Vidal’s Falling before the installation fades away after Friday, January 17, 2014.

The third installment in Monica Vidal’s interactive HIVE series, Falling is comprised of a large freestanding installation made up of brightly colored blue fabric pieces sewn together and fitted atop a collection of tent poles. The work was conceived as a portable spiritual and collective space that will call to people and draw them together. Part blankets-and-dining-room-table fort and part miniature circus tent, the installation touches on shared childhood imagery.

According to Vidal, the piece was originally inspired by a recurring childhood dream in which she was stranded on the edge of a dark icy pit, surrounded by a jagged arctic wasteland. As she would repeatedly try to climb down into the pit she would end up falling in and find herself submerged in an abstract space of prismatic blues.

On the walls surrounding Falling, you’ll also see renderings, illustrations and sketches that were were Vidal used in the planning, design and development of the work.

Houston-based Monica Vidal originally hails from Erie, Pennsylvania. Her works consist of large-scale, mixed media sculptures, drawings, paintings and prints. She holds a BFA at Cleveland Institute of Art and a MFA from Tyler School of Art of Temple University.
