Learn about the history and importance of Black cultural organizations in Houston when Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a virtual panel discussion on Saturday, August 15, 2020.
On view through Sunday, August 30, 2020, Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power takes viewers through work created by more than 60 Black artists during the revolutionary times of Civil Rights in the 1960s, as well as the emergence of identity politics in the 1980s. In support of the month-long exhibition, a series of panel discussions have accompanied the ongoing exhibit, examining the rich legacy of Black art from a global perspective to its role here in Houston.
The fifth and final live-streamed panel discussion takes place this weekend, diving into the history and importance of Black cultural organizations in Houston and their role in today’s social and political climate. Moderated by John Guess, chief executive officer for the Houston Museum of African American Culture, the panel will also include nationally recognized artist Vicki Meek; Eileen Morris, the artistic director of Ensemble Theatre; and Harrison Guy, artistic director for Urban Souls Dance Company.
