There’s always something to do in Houston and I shared four of our favorites the talented Deborah Duncan on Great Day Houston this morning. See those four plus one bonus option below.
5 Labor Day Weekend Picks
- Big Dipper Dash at Stude Park in the Heights | Saturday, September 5 – The title of the 5K run, walk or however you’d prefer to complete the course that starts at Stude Park and meanders about White Oak Bayou fittingly nods to what’s known about the American Civil War. Slaves who were escaping captivity looked to Polaris, the North Star, to march onto freedom. The shape of the Big Dipper happens to point to this shinning beacon that symbolizes liberation. Benefiting United Against Human Trafficking, the run includes a post-race party with food and beverages. $30 registration. 4pm.
- Final Days of Houston Restaurant Weeks | Through Monday, September 7 – The reason why you need the Big Dipper Dash is because all of us — guilty! — have been overeating courtesy of a million dollar campaign that raises money for the Houston Food Bank. More than 200 restaurant offer multi-course menus for lunch, brunch and dinner, the purchase of each means restaurateurs donate a portion of the proceeds to the largest food bank in the nation. You know what they say: Calories don’t count if it’s for a good cause. Bon appetite.
- Fly Dance Company’s 20th Anniversary Concert and Fundraiser at the Barn | Friday, September 4 and Saturday, September 5 – Don’t you just love an underdog story? Meet Fly Dance Company, a hip hop troupe with a mission: To offer a forum for emerging artists to shine while serving as role models for their even younger audiences. These “Gentlemen of Hip Hop” performances will blow you away with high energy, exquisite technique and friendly personality. The company celebrates its 20th anniversary by welcoming back founder and artistic director Kathy Wood. Admission start at $25. 8pm.
- Labor Day Weekend at the Waterway in The Woodlands | Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6 | FREE – Those who complain that the suburbs have nothing to do: Shush. Labor Day welcomes a two-day family affair that includes live music, roaming performers and fireworks on both nights. Keep an eye out for acrobatic and circus performances by Cirque La Vie, no doubt one of the big highlights of the event. 6pm to 9pm.
- First Saturday Arts Market in The Heights | Saturday, September 5 | FREE – The monthly fete that started in 2004 continues to offer guests the whimsy quality of this historic nabe through fine arts, crafts, objects and more items that defy classification. More than just an afternoon of shopping, First Saturday Arts Market in the Heights also welcomes food trucks, live music and happy people everywhere. If your wallet is a bit thin, though, I suggest you go anyway. The people watching is priceless.
