Mark the official 161st anniversary of Juneteenth, which began on Galveston Island, at events happening in Greater Houston and on the island from Saturday, June 6, to the national holiday of Juneteenth itself on Friday, June 19, and beyond.

This year marks the 161st anniversary of the date that news of the Emancipation Proclamation first reached Texas and was read aloud in Galveston on June 19, 1865—two years after it had become U.S. law.

These days, the month of June is packed with events celebrating Juneteenth in the greater Houston metro. But no weekend is busier that Juneteenth weekend itself.
