Become one with the shadows of Anila Quayyum Agha’s, Intersections currently on view at Rice Gallery through Sunday, December 6, 2015.
Pakistani-American artist Anila Quayyum Agha manages to turn the empty Rice Gallery into beautiful architecture with just the flip of a switch and a single bulb in her beautifully patterned and 2014 ArtPrize award-winning work, Intersections.
Agha was first inspired to create Intersections while on a visit to a 9th century fortress called the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. The interiors of the Alhambra, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, mesmerized Agha with the intricately designed Islamic art covering every surface.
Agha’s translation of these sights into Intersections is done through the suspension of a perplexingly designed laser-cut wood cube that casts gorgeous shadow patterns across gallery walls, floor, and ceiling.
Her decorative translation is on view now and open to all at Rice Gallery through Sunday, December 6, 2015.
