Multi-cultural, multi-ethnic India is a country that celebrates festivals across all religions with music, dance and a hint of spirituality. That festive energy will take over Discovery Green with a grand, free celebration of Rath Yatra, the Chariot Festival, and all things India.
Blending culture, spirituality, devotion, food, dance, music and the spirit of India, the Greater Houston Rath Yatra India Festival is perfect opportunity to explore the land known for its diverse culture, rich traditions and exotic heritage.
Entertainment
The family-friendly, all-ages event will feature traditional Indian Odissi dances and the flying acrobatic drummers Mayapuris, who promise to mesmerize the crowd with their rhythmic and athletic performance.
Tablatronics – a lively and eclectic mix of dance, music and live tablas – will follow, energizing the crowd while demonstrating a clear progression from the traditional to the modern.
Following the Rath Yatra, the Chariot Festival itself, the evening will conclude with the traditional Indian group dance Dandiya Raas, which is performed using dancing sticks, Dandiyas. Everyone will be encouraged to join in, with free dancing sticks courtesy of Zee TV, the largest Indian Television station. Trained dancers will help festival-goers learn the dance form.
Chariot Festival
The main event is Rath Yatra, or Chariot Festival, in which dieties of the Hindu Lord Jaganath are paraded around the city. At Discovery Green, chariots will be pulled around the venue, with drums and dances marking the procession. The observance of the deity, or the Maha Puja, will be organised and everyone present will be invited to receive the holy offering or the Prasad.
Market
Exclusive Indian jewelry and designer clothes will be available for purchase. Get the Indian body art at the live henna stalls.
At the food stands, visitors can sample the Indian tadka and satiate their taste buds with the finest Indian cuisine and delicacies.
The free evening of entertainment, music, dance and good energy is the perfect opportunity to explore one’s passion for Indian culture, or learn more about the country for the very first time.
