Top Live Theater & Performing Arts This Week: October 21 to 27, 2024

See the latest performing arts productions and theater happenings opening across Houston from Monday, October 21 to Sunday, October 27, 2024.

One of musical theater’s most-loved shows opens this week, given a brand-new production by TUTS. Audiences can see a classic fairy tale in a way they might not have seen before at Houston Grand Opera.

The week is also highlighted with a performance by the energetic Fly Dance Company, Context’s performance of a much-loved Ravel composition, and a play at Stages that turns the Sherlock Holmes stories on their head

Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: October 21 to 27, 2024

  • TUTS presents Little Shop of Horrors at the Hobby Center | Opens Tuesday – The brand new production follows the story of Seymour, an unremarkable shop boy who discovers a rare and unusual plant that will bring him everything he’s ever wanted. But what will it cost him? With bouncy music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, it features songs like “Suddenly Seymour,” “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Skid Row.” $40 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • ECHO Orchestra & Fly Dance Company present The Gentlemen of Hip Hop at Strake Jesuit High School Parsley Center | Thursday – The orchestra and dance company team up for an incredible evening of original spoken word works paired with music. Houston’s fifth poet laureate Outspoken Bean will also perform. $25 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Mercury Chamber Orchestra presents Classical Piano Trios Around Houston | Thursday to Sunday – Part of Mercury’s Neighborhood series, the orchestra performs piano compositions by Haydn, Mozart and more at venues in the Heights, Memorial, Museum District, and The Woodlands. $35. Showtimes and locations vary.
  • Alley All-New Festival | Friday to Sunday | FREE with RSVP – Be in the audience to get a first look at plays that may appear in full productions at the Alley, as well as at theaters around the country. Reservations are required. Times vary.
  • Orchestral Fireworks at Stude Concert Hall | Friday – Conductor Jerry Hou leads Rice’s Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra in a lively concert that includes HGO Composer in Residence Joel Thompson’s take on To See the Sky, Sibelius’s “Symphony No. 7” and Lutosławski’s “Concerto for Orchestra”. 7:30pm.
  • Houston Grand Opera presents Cinderella at the Wortham Center | Opens Friday – This tale of goodness in the face of cruelty is set to one of opera’s most sparkling scores. Rossini’s opera follows the story of Angelina, stepdaughter to Don Magnifico (and known to many of us as Cinderella), who must fight for the love of her prince. A wildly colorful production that’s a feast for the senses, this is a Cinderella tale many may not have seen before. $25 and up. Times and dates vary.
  • Stages presents Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B at the Gordy | Previews Begin Friday – Buckle up for playwright Kate Hamil’s fast-paced, hilarious gender-swapped romp that’s a fresh take on the legendary detectives. Holmes, a manic, razor-sharp genius, must entice Watson, a recuperating American divorcée, to tumble from one caper to the next. But when they encounter a supervillain, they dive into a full-on murder mystery. $25 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • B Mo Holy Productions presents Divorce Saved My Marriage at MATCH | Saturday – After five years, the Graysons have discovered marriage is not all bliss and bouquets. The routine of daily activities creates friction and puts the relationship in jeopardy. “For better, for worse” takes on a whole new meaning in this hilarious, adrenaline-fueled escapade. $35. 4pm.
  • Cheyenne Jackson: Signs of Life at the Hobby Center | Saturday – The Broadway, television and film star comes to Houston for a live concert. Theatergoers know him from originating the role of Matthew in the off-Broadway musical Altar Boyz, and from All Shook Up, Xanadu, Damn Yankees, Finian’s Rainbow, The Performers, and Into the Woods. $42.40 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Music in Context presents The Ravel Trio at Duncan Recital Hall | Sunday – Rice University hosts a chamber concert featuring little-known gems for strings and piano, along with one of the world’s most-lauded trios. It’s an afternoon of beautiful music. $35. 4pm.

Final Performances This Week

You’ve only got until Saturday, October 26 to see Classical Theatre Company’s production of Dracula at the DeLuxe Theater. Garden Theatre’s take on Assassins bows out at MATCH on Sunday, October 27.
