Broadway Across America: Shucked at Hobby Center | Tuesday to Sunday – The hilarious Tony-winning musical comedy focuses on the residents of Cobb County, who embark on a scheme to save their dying corn crop. Expect corny humor, along with adult themes and language. Recommended for ages 10 and up. $40 and up. Showtimes vary.
Emerging Choreographers Showcase at the University of Houston Quintero Theatre | Thursday to Sunday – See the work of students in the University’s dance program in this evening of mixed rep. The showcase includes student choreographers whose creations promise a wide range of captivating performances with various themes and genres.
ROCO Unchambered: Into The Light with Bernhard Scully & Matthew McClung in Concert at Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall | Thursday | FREE – This immersive ethereal evening inside the Menil’s colorful—and often overlooked—rainbow-hued lightscape is a soundscape of chamber works for brass and percussion by Mark Schultz, Verne Reynolds, and Alec Wilder, plus a jazzy surprise. Reservations requested. 7pm.
4th Wall Theatre Company: Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike at Spring Street Studios | Opens Friday – Christopher Durang’s comedy is the story of middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia, living an uneventful life in Pennsylvania. Then, their sister Masha shows up with her much-younger love, Spike. Chaos ensues. $32 and up. Showtimes vary.
The Lucky Spot at Island ETC | Opens Friday – It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, and 15-year-old Cassidy Smith is very pregnant with the child of 40ish Reed Hooker. That’s just the start of what happens in this colorful play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Beth Henley. It’s a story of dreams and reality, and how family can support or upend it all. $35. Showtimes vary.
Musica Tra Amici: Timeless Trios at MATCH | Sunday – Lose yourself in legendary trios by Beethoven and Rachmaninov. Beethoven’s final piano trio, named for his benefactor the Archduke Rudolph, is considered to be not only one of the capstones to Beethoven’s ‘heroic’ middle period, but also one of the greatest compositions in the trio repertoire. Rachmaninoff’s brief but emotionally transfixing Trio élégiaque No. 1 beautiful and melodic work shows the influence of his mentor Tchaikovsky, but has the unmistakable stamp of Rachmaninoff’s own genius. $35. 7pm.
Final Performances This Week
Lionwoman Productions closes Playhouse Creatures at MATCH on Saturday. Shucked ends its one-week run at the Hobby Center on Sunday.
