See the latest performing arts productions and theater happenings opening across Houston from Monday, September 23 to Sunday, September 29, 2024.

Two classic comedies light up Houston stages this week, as the Alley opens the raucous Noises Off! and Theatre Southwest presents The Odd Couple. A Grammy-winning quartet makes its DaCamera debut, works by an iconic choreographer come alive at the Wortham Center and world premieres from ROCO and Chapman Dance introduce audiences to new works. Whew!

Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: September 23 to 29, 2024

  • DaCamera presents Takács Quartet & Pianist Jeremy Denk at the Hobby Center | Thursday – Making their DaCamera debut, the internationally-renowned, Grammy-winning Takács Quartet offers a concert featuring a Haydn quartet filled with dramatic twists and surprises, and Janáček’s first quartet, inspired by Tolstoy’s tale of passion, jealousy and murder. $46 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Chapman Dance presents Entanglements at MATCH | Thursday to Saturday – The ensemble presents a new collection of contemporary dances inspired by physics and driven by our most basic human need for connection. $25. 7:30pm daily.
  • Houston Symphony presents Fiesta Sinfónica at Jones Hall | Friday | FREE with RSVP – This annual concert celebrates the rich cultural impact of Latin American and Hispanic composers. This year’s program features Enrique Soro’s Danza Fantástica, the famous Peruvian waltz, La flor de la canela, and Venezuela’s unofficial second national anthem, Alma Llanera. Plus, don’t miss the world premiere of Arturo Márquez’s Guitar Concerto with special guest, Spanish guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villegas. RSVP required. 7:30pm.
  • ROCO presents Remarkable Around Houston | Friday & Saturday – The ensemble’s full 40-piece orchestra opens the 2024-2025 season with a concert featuring multiple world premieres. Constellations by Viet Cuong, spotlighting “constellations” of ROCO musicians as soloists in each movementThe world premiere, led by Vietnamese-American composer Viet Cuong, is a free performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre, followed by a pay-what-you-wish show at the intimate Church of St. John the Divine in River Oaks. Times, locations, and prices vary.
  • Noises Off at Alley Theatre | Opens Friday – The Alley kicks off its 2024-2025 season with a popular comedy that perfectly captures the chaos of life backstage in a theater production. Find out what happens when a bunch of eccentric actors attempt to stage a play. $28 and up. Times vary.
  • Island Etc. presents The Odd Couple | Opens Friday – The Galveston theater troupe performs the classic Neil Simon comedy, about newly separated, neurotic neat freak Felix Unger who finds himself rooming with the divorced, slovenly Oscar Madison. Expect conflict and hilarity. $35. Times vary.
  • UH Katherine G. McGovern College of the Arts School of Theatre & Dance presents By the Way, Meet Vera Stark in the Quinto Theatre | Opens Friday – Drawing on details from the life of Black actress Theresa Harris and with elements of 1930s Hollywood screwball comedies, this play by Lynn Nottage explores 70 years in the life of its title character, a maid turned movie star. $30. Times vary.
  • Inprint Houston & Musiqa present New Voices at MATCH | Saturday – This blend of music and poetry introduces audiences to new works by composers Ben Morris and Marco-Adrián Ramos, as well as Marcus Karl Maroney’s piano trio. There is also new poetry by Justin Jannise. It’s an opportunity to be among the first to see these premieres by up and coming artists. Pay-What-You-Can. 7:30pm.
  • Performing Arts Houston presents Twyla Tharp Dance at the Wortham Center | Saturday – The revolutionary choreographer celebrates her 60th anniversary with this boundary-breaking program featuring new works plus a revival of Ocean’s Motion featuring the music of Chuck Berry. $29 and up. 7:30pm.

Final Performances This Week

Closing soon: Musical theater fans won’t the stellar cast tearing it up in the Rec Room’s tour de force production of Spring Awakening. The show closes Saturday, September 28. Theatre Southwest’s Emilie by Lauren Gunderson also closes on Saturday, September 28. The last day to catch the incredible cast of Mildred’s Umbrella’s production of Cry it Out is Sunday, September 29, which is also your last day to catch Houston Ballet’s Velocity.
