Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: July 10 to July 16, 2023

  • Texas New Music Festival at MATCH | Monday, July 10 to Sunday, July 16 | Some FREE – A great opportunity to explore the diversity of Houston’s rich musical arts, this week-long fest hosts workshops for musicians who can also premiere their compositions, while audiences can experience brand new pieces and learn how art is created. Enjoy concerts (including a free one on Wednesday), and a guest lecture on Saturday with Carlos Chavez, Mexico’s first international composer. $20 for individual concerts; $50 for a festival pass. Some events are free. Times vary.
  • Paul Hope Cabaret presents Ultra Lounge Mambo Fever at Ovations Night Club | Monday, July 10 | Ongoing  The cabaret troupe opens the Great American Songbook and finds an array of selections, ranging from cha cha to mambo and everywhere in between. Look for songs like “Besame Mucho,” “The Girl from Ipanema” and more. $15 and up. 7:30pm.
  • TUTS: A Celebration of Houston Stories & Songs at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Tuesday, July 11 to Saturday, July 15 | FREE – This salute to the Bayou City brings Houston stars to the Miller stage, performing iconic songs from Broadway and beyond that echo Theatre Under the Stars’ 55-year association with Miller Outdoor Theatre. Arrive early for Friday and Saturday’s performance at 6:30pm for a celebration of Miller Outdoor with puppet shows, magicians and a larger-than-life birthday cake photo opportunity. 8:30pm.
  • Waking Up Free: India’s Journey Dance Performance at MFAH | Thursday, July 13 | FREE – Silambam Houston uses a kaleidoscope of dance to tell the stories of India’s struggle for independence while celebrating the country’s diversity. 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
  • Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone in Concert at Hobby Center | Friday, July 14 & Saturday, July 15 – The movie that opens the saga of the boy wizard and his Hogwarts adventures screens as the Houston Symphony plays the stirring score by John Williams live. $59 and up. Friday 7:30pm; Saturday 2:30pm and 7:30pm.
  • Present Laughter at Main Street Theater | Saturday, July 15 | Ongoing – Noel Coward’s sparkling comedy about a self-obsessed actor going through a midlife crisis draws on the playwright’s own life. This production runs through Sunday, August 13. $39 and up. Showtimes vary.
